“I am excited by the prospect of contributing to LGS research in a manner that can ultimately lead to improved treatments for patients.” – Colleen Carpenter, PhD, Grant Recipient Through our Cure LGS 365 Grants Program, the LGS Foundation funds groundbreaking scientific research - like the work of Stanford researchers who discovered a new region in the brain responsible for starting and stopping seizures. Together, we’re paving the way for better treatments and brighter futures for those living with LGS. The authors of this article highlight both the unique challenges faced by and the contributions made by academic medical centers (AMCs) that serve as their state’s lone AMC, through the experience of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. In addition, they lay out ideas to address some of the most severe threats facing lone AMCs. Although each lone AMC will need to devise solutions to address the specific challenges it faces, based on their own experience, the authors lay out three action items: (1) operate more like a private business, (2) expand investment in governmental affairs efforts, and (3) be selective and deliberate in identifying and investing in those areas that will become nationally recognized: https://nej.md/3OLet1R

Thrilled to share our latest paper published in the European Journal of Heart Failure #EJHF. We evaluated the quality of reporting in heart failure randomized controlled trials in high-impact journals by assessing their adherence to #CONSORT reporting guidelines. We found that the overall quality of trial reporting has improved over time, though it remains suboptimal, especially in less common trial designs like multi-group, cluster randomized, and non-inferiority or equivalence trials. Use of the CONSORT checklist, particularly in uncommon designs, could increase the transparency of trial reporting and better inform the interpretation of results, practice, and policy. #trialdesign #consort #evidence Veronica Augustina Bot Lehana Thabane, PhD

At a good and inspiring Day 1 at the AESIS conference on Societal Impact of Scientific Research in Dublin, three points resonated particularly well with me: 1) "Start by creating relationships to create impact", 2) "Ask not if it's perfect, but ask if it's better", and 3) "Let's talk about what 'indicates impact' rather than 'impact indicators' ". I made new friends and reconnected with old friends - so looking very much forward to the next couple of days :-) #IOS24, AESIS Network, #impact, #research, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, UCPH, University College Dublin, Anika Suzanne Duut van Goor

In their new Forefront article, Yarden S. Fraiman, DeWayne M. Pursley, Megan Sandel, Blair W. Weikel, Michelle A. Williams, and Sunah S. Hwang from Harvard Medical School, Boston Medical Center (BMC), and University of Colorado School of Medicine discuss how Personal Conflict of Interest disclosure offers a promising approach whereby authors acknowledge their own personal identities to promote transparency and accountability through systemic policy change. "All research is dependent on human choices and experiences; researchers select their question of interest, data collection approaches and tools, conceptual frameworks, study recruitment approaches, study sites, and the characteristics of study subjects eligible to participate in studies. Even the variables and factors that researchers include in their models can have monumental effects on the scientific findings and conclusions." Read the full article here: https://bit.ly/4eCLmIW

I think we all agree...research cannot be done without participants. Expressing gratitude and honoring participants for their part in research should be a standard of practice. Appreciation is especially vital for studies conducted during emergencies and with participants from ancestral groups with a history of medical and research trauma. But how should researchers go about it? How can we acknowledge participants’ efforts and time beyond compensation? Dig into and share a CEACR toolkit made to support researchers who want to show appreciation directly to participants for their time and effort: https://bit.ly/4eOK6ST
