We set out to challenge traditional aid models and build a commercial, publicly listed company driving sustainable growth in East Africa. 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘆 – research shows only 1 in 10 startups succeed. Yet, despite the odds and countless challenges, we’ve created incredible impact, such as: • 𝗣𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗮𝗻𝘇𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗮 with Mtaji Wetu Finance giving SMEs access to financing that fuels their growth. • 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 in Kenya and Tanzania’s blue economy through a NOK 25 million NORAD grant with TechBridge Invest. • 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗶 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗸, growing revenues tenfold, producing award-winning milk, and helping over 400 smallholder farmers while advancing sustainable packaging. • 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗠𝗧𝗜 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟭, opening the door for anyone to invest in East Africa’s growth story. 🌏 What does it take to create sustainable impact through entrepreneurship? A recent event hosted by the Asia Community Foundation and featuring Peter Wuffli from elea, Zhihan Lee from BagoSphere, and Shuvavish Bhowmick from ATEC Global highlighted key strategies for building and supporting sustainable impact through entrepreneurship: ⏳ Long-Term Impact Requires Patient Capital: For businesses aimed at tackling issues like absolute poverty, especially in challenging sectors such as farming and micro-retail, patient capital is crucial. Investments need time to yield results, and setting realistic expectations on returns helps ensure long-lasting impact. 👤 Investing in People, Not Just Ideas: The value of a business starts with the people behind it. Thorough due diligence and building trust with entrepreneurs are essential for de-risking and aligning on goals. Ultimately, it is about supporting individuals who have both the passion and resilience to make a difference. 📊 Sustainable Business Models Are Key to Scaling: Achieving scalable impact requires financially sustainable models. Businesses in the impact space are increasingly focusing on financial viability, as it is the foundation for growing and amplifying their influence over time. It is inspiring to see how investing in the right people and providing the right kind of capital can drive change. 🌱 ➡️ Read more about how Asia Community Foundation's Impact Funds are driving sustainable impact across some of Southeast Asia's most pressing issues here: https://lnkd.in/gWqCCHHf #impactinvesting #impactentrepreneurship #patientcapital 📸: Asia Community Foundation

June 27 is celebrated as the World MSME Day to raise awareness of the tremendous contributions of micro-, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) to the economy and towards the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). MSMEs are the backbone of our economy, whether it is manufacturing, agriculture or services, the keep the wheels of the economy moving and are the largest providers of employment. Having worked with ta large number of SMEs and startups in diverse sectors and of different sizes, it truly excites us to think about the potential that these SMEs hold in turning around the economy. Based on my limited experience, internal capacity in various functional areas (marketing is often near the top of that list!), managing growth and adapting to the evolving business models are the areas where the SMEs mostly face challenges. Thus, a bit of hand holding can go a long way in helping them to realize their full potential. We also have a number of success stories where SMEs which made the right strategic choices and combined with execution excellence have transformed themselves into large business conglomerates. In the case of Pakistan, the SMEs and startups truly hold the key to the much-needed economic turnaround. @Resource Edge celebrates the never say die spirit of the SMEs and entrepreneurs ! hashtag #entrepreneurship #innovation #ecommerce #Investment #MSMEDay2024 #SupportLocalMSMEs #WorldMSMEDay
