Before I was adopted by my gran, I was living on a mattress with very little amount of clothing. Due to her commitment and support, she continually built myself up, by getting new clothes, as well as hand-me-downs, and having to work consistently 60/70 hours a week, in order to provide when she was in her late 40s until her death at age 62. Thinking about the young people across the globe, so many children are struggling with even the bare necessities and it is hard to deal with. As a global community, whilst it is clear that businesses require to make a profit, the philanthropy of such, is also important. This impact has the greater benefit to businesses for reduction of taxation as well as the increase wellbeing of employees. But how do we continue to empower this sector? How do we involve the employees to these incentives, without making them fear about their productivity and quality assurance of working ethics? Of course, idle time can have an adverse impact on the cost benefit for the business, but employees are not robots. The acronym JOY for me, can be translated as Joining Others with Yourself in the context of working together for the greater good.

Today is International E-Waste Day. This week is Anti-Poverty Week. It’s also Get Online Week. And October is Small Business Month. At The Reconnect Project, we tackle and celebrate all these events every single day. We’re on a mission to stop mobile devices from prematurely becoming e-waste; we help financially disadvantaged individuals, students and families to get online by providing access to quality refurbished tech; and we do all this as a small business social enterprise (and charity). I loved Jessica Chen's perspective this week on how to answer  “what do you do for work?” Too often, we default to our title, and role. "I'm the VP of X at Y company/organization". She shared this formula, “You know how (state issue)? So what I do is (share solution). For example (give proof).” It's a door opener to further conversation. Here's mine. "You know how people are carrying less and less cash these days? I help non-profits and companies collect donations and tips through in-person contactless payments. For example, our solution has helped the Salvation Army collect over $7 Million dollars over the last 4 years to allow them to help even more people in need."
