British Columbia’s salmon farming industry sees a new era on the horizon as Canada adopts a “whole-of-government” approach to the sector’s transition away from open net pen farming. In a bold move, the Fisheries and Oceans Canada / Pêches et Océans Canada (DFO) will no longer lead the process in BC. Instead, a multi-agency task force—coordinated by the newly formed secretariat called ISED, or Industry, Science and Economic Development Canada, will steer the effort. This shift is significant for Jennifer Woodland, chair of the BC Salmon Farmers Association and managing director of Grieg Seafood BC Ltd., as the DFO has historically acted as both a regulator and a promoter of the industry, a dual role that some in the industry see as limiting the sector's potential. Woodland shared her optimism: "We've never had a true champion for aquaculture in Canada. This broader approach, with its focus on the bigger picture, is crucial," she told former Mowi executive Ian Roberts, in the Salmon Farming Inside & Out podcast.
