British Columbia’s salmon farming industry sees a new era on the horizon as Canada adopts a “whole-of-government” approach to the sector’s transition away from open net pen farming. In a bold move, the Fisheries and Oceans Canada / Pêches et Océans Canada (DFO) will no longer lead the process in BC. Instead, a multi-agency task force—coordinated by the newly formed secretariat called ISED, or Industry, Science and Economic Development Canada, will steer the effort. This shift is significant for Jennifer Woodland, chair of the BC Salmon Farmers Association and managing director of Grieg Seafood BC Ltd., as the DFO has historically acted as both a regulator and a promoter of the industry, a dual role that some in the industry see as limiting the sector's potential. Woodland shared her optimism: "We've never had a true champion for aquaculture in Canada. This broader approach, with its focus on the bigger picture, is crucial," she told former Mowi executive Ian Roberts, in the Salmon Farming Inside & Out podcast. 📝 39 organisations and academics from West Africa and across the world are calling on the Norwegian government to take rapid action to regulate the country’s salmon farming industry. Our recent Blue Empire report exposes how Norway’s salmon farming industry uses around 2 million tonnes of wild-caught fish each year to feed farmed salmon. Much of this fish comes from food insecure regions, such as West Africa. The production of West African fish oil for the Norwegian aquaculture industry is depriving up to 4 million people in the region of fish. The Norwegian government’s uncritical embrace of industrial fish farming stands in stark contrast to its own development policy, which has identified food security and the fight against hunger, notably in Sub-Saharan Africa, as a priority area. We are calling on Norwegian policy makers to: 🐟 Ensure that Norwegian companies’ activities and feed sourcing practices do not contradict its own development policy by mandating an immediate ban on the sourcing of fish oil from food insecure regions including Northwest Africa; ❌Stop further growth in Norway’s salmon farming sector so that it remains within planetary boundaries; 🔍Mandate genuine transparency throughout aquaculture supply chains, including full disclosure of suppliers – from source fisheries upwards Read the letter now: https://buff.ly/4brdH2Q #Norway #SalmonFarming #FoodJustice #sustainability #SustainableFood #aquaculture

Did you know that ~88% of assessed fish stocks are either overfished or at their maximum sustainable limits? This week, we analysed 114 European aquaculture players and collected valuable insights on the increasing dominance of a select group of fisheries, the main drivers behind margin expansion in the challenging fish processing and distribution market as well as the emerging opportunities in controlled-environment fish farming. PE interest has been low, with ~15% of identified assets being sponsor-backed. Key reasons to invest include the positive population growth projections and rising seafood consumption, adoption of land-based fish farms with enhanced productivity and growing demand for low-impact and traceable seafood products. On the other hand, the lack of sustainable catch limits, rising aquaculture production costs and competition from countries with more favourable regulations serve as detractors for investors. Alantra Wealth Management, AMDG PRIVATE EQUITY, AMERRA Capital Management, LLC, CapMan, Corporacion Financiera Alba SA, Craft Capital, GED Capital, IDIA Capital Investissement, LRF Ventures, MCH Private Equity, Mubadala, Novax, Oquendo Capital, PAI Partners, Portobello Capital, Rigeto Unternehmerkapital, SOCADIF Capital Investissement, Summa Equity, Unigrains Valedo Partners, VigentGroup and Xenon Private Equity, amongst others, are currently invested in the European aquaculture market. 𝐅𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐩𝐞𝐝𝐨 𝐁.𝐂. 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐬 🐟 "Ottawa's decision to ban open net-pen salmon farming in BC by 2029 is a reckless move that endangers thousands of jobs and exacerbates food insecurity" say prominent Indigenous and Aquaculture industry voices. Ottawa’s fisheries minister Diane Lebouthillier punched the torpedos-away button with her announcement Wednesday that Canada will ban open net-pen salmon aquaculture in BC coastal waters by June 30, 2029. Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance cited a report that estimated the removal of current BC salmon farms could double the cost of retail salmon in Canada. “The objective is irresponsible because it threatens 5,000 highly paid and skilled jobs in coastal British Columbia (the youngest agri-food workforce in Canada and 500 of these jobs held by Indigenous people) during a time of economic stagnation. These jobs were considered ‘essential’ to Canada only a few years ago. Nobody has proposed any plan to build a large-scale new system in BC and big land-based aquaculture systems in Nova Scotia and Florida have to date been big money losers. Columnist John Ivison of National Post had this to say on X (formerly Twitter): “Death of another resource industry: the decision to force the West Coast salmon fishing industry to take its pens out of the water will kill it. The return on investment does not justify spending the billions needed to build on-land facilities.” And he also wrote: “The reality is that the decision . . . is a death sentence for an industry that employs thousands of people, sustains a number of impoverished First Nations communities and generates more than $1 billion in revenues as British Columbia’s largest agricultural export earner.” 🔗https://ow.ly/uIR150SCwUw #foodsecurity #fishhealthandwelfare #innovation #aquaculture #fishfarmer #sustainability #fishfarm #hatchery #funding #sustainableaquaculture #trout #salmonfarms #research #networking #salmonfarm #aquaculturist #salmon #sustainablefood #sustainable #fishfarmers #fishery #farmer #seafood #finfish Resource Works BC Salmon Farmers Association Indigenous Resource Network Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance

Honoring Blue Revolution National Fish Farmer's Day is celebrated on 10th July every year to recognize and appreciate the invaluable contributions of fish farmers, aquaculture industry professionals, and other stakeholders toward ensuring a sustainable and thriving fisheries sector. The farmers of Liti village in Bageshwar, Uttarakhand (India) have taken a unique initiative with the support of Fishery department. They have initiated community fish farming where 4-5 farmers have collectively constructed trout fish ponds and doing trout farming. They manage the fish ponds on rotation basis i.e., one week per family and the sale from the production is shared among all families. Collective construction, sharing of cost construction and roational management of pond makes it unique and successful model that could be replicated in other mountain areas. This unique way of fishery has diversified the income of the farmers, enterprise development, added essential protein to their diet, improved livelihoods, increased farm tourism and minimized migration from the village. Similar ponds are being replicated in the adjoining villages. #Fishery #fishfarmers #bluerevolution #mountains #originforsustainability #mountainsmatter

🐟 Celebration of 10th World Fisheries Day: Mola Fish Harvesting Event 🐟 On the occasion of the 10th World Fisheries Day, a Mola Fish Harvesting event was organized at Nawguda Village, Seethampeta Mandal, Andhra Pradesh. This marks the first-ever initiative in the state to introduce the Small Indigenous Fish Mola in rainfed ponds. The event was graced by the District Development Manager (DDM), NABARD, and Assistant Project Officer (APO), ITDA, who witnessed the successful auto-breeding and multiplication of Mola carplets. As part of the program, an elevated poultry shed was inaugurated on the eco-farm pond bund, aligning with the IFS (Integrated Farming Systems) model. Additionally, carp yearlings were released into the same pond, introducing a Mola-carp polyculture system. The performance of Mola is being closely monitored. The District Collector has emphasized the importance of analyzing the nutritional value of Mola fish to assess its potential for further upscaling. The event exemplified a collaborative effort towards innovation in sustainable fisheries and farming practices, setting a precedent for similar initiatives across the state. With the support of HDFC Bank Parivartan, a total of 140 eco-farm ponds have been established in the tribal areas of Manyam district in Andhra Pradesh. These are generating an additional income of Rs 25000 from fisheries, vegetables and fruit trees on bunds. #rainfed #ecofarmponds #IntegratedFarmingSystems #FarmPonds #Farmers #SustainableFisheries #FarmingPractices
