Summary of impacts on public sector and next steps following today's DRS announcement from my colleague Louise Cowan MCIWM (Bradney). Take a pause, have a read and feel free to get in touch if you're looking to understand impacts further.

The main take away from the Scottish Land & Estates Conference yesterday was that ‘less strategy and more doing’ was required for rural Scotland. Governments need to provide leadership for regulatory direction, with solutions coming from industry. Anas Sarwar MSP confirmed this stating the role of government was 3-fold; 1. Collaboration and partnership working 2. Develop strategic long term planning 3. Provide the ‘convening’ power The theme of the conference, Resilience: Building successful businesses for the future attracted thought provoking speakers and the case study and panel sessions were inspiring. There is a raft of policy currently swirling all of which need the ‘so what’ answering. The integration between food production and the environment was cemented - Vicki Swales said “without nature land based businesses are threatened” and regenerative agriculture was mentioned a number of times - ties in well with Savills Rural Reseach Food and the Environment spotlight due out early June. Tim Bradshaw highlighted 3 key takeaways to build personal resilience: 1. Focus on intelligence not information. Take a tactical pause! 2. Enable resilience in others - it only takes a human touch to make a huge difference 3. FEAR = false expectation appearing real I.e focus on what you can do Sarah-Jane Laing summed up the day “words aren’t enough, we need direct action”. Evelyn Channing Hugo Struthers Lucy Jenner

Over 100 businesses focused on ocean farming and marine activities across Europe, including an abalone farm in Co. Galway, are joining forces with Trinity College Dublin and the WDC for an important research project about how economic activities can help the environment. This effort is part of the GoNaturePositive! initiative, kicked off by Minister Malcolm Noonan, aiming to leverage the marine sector for sustainable growth in Ireland and beyond. With the Irish government allocating €3.15 billion for climate and environmental projects, this project, funded by Horizon Europe, marks a significant move towards blending business with environmental care. This research aims to provide key insights into sustainable development, particularly beneficial for the western region of Ireland. It will help shape policies, guide local businesses, and craft a future economy that supports both the region's growth and the environment. Today is the Nature Finance Conference where our Director of Natural Solutions, Matt Bucker, is delivering a seminar on strategic funding plans to leverage private investment in nature, gaining a first-hand understanding of how public and private funding can work together in practice at a landscape scale. Matt advised ‘ Farmers and land managers can currently only generate income from their land through extractive activities, converting natural capital to economic capital. There is a huge shortfall in funding for nature’s recovery, which UK PLC recognises is critically important for our future economy. We need to create new mechanisms to enable farmers and land managers to generate income through nature’s recovery, through funding for natural flood management, carbon storage, health and wellbeing, ecotourism and a range of other ecosystem services. The Government's (legally binding) target to halt the decline of wildlife needs action on the ground from businesses and decision makers. But how do we make sure the chain of responsibility makes it to them from the Secretary of State? A new report published today by WWF-UK makes the case for Government to develop “nature-positive pathways”, setting out how different economic sectors should contribute to halting and reversing nature’s decline by 2030. It argues that Government should decide how much each sector must contribute to solving the key causes of nature-loss, based on how much that sector contributes to the problem, the cost and opportunities of change, and the impacts on people and businesses. Overall, the effort allocated to each sector should add up to meeting the targets. From there, the Government should work with businesses to set out the big policy levers needed for change in each sector, giving certainty for investment as well as clear accountability.
