So...how do I pick them up at 2pm? Summer is on. My work hasn't changed. Last year, we tried 8am to 6pm summer camps - they ended up being great for us as working parents, but a terrible fit for our little one. This year, better fitting camps will end ~2/3pm with some at least 30 minutes away. I am grateful for having this flexibility and choice AND things will be very different in how I work, how to schedule with clients appropriately, etc. Some may have kids home all day. Whether you have a parent or not on your team, summer is a shift for many. Consider asking your teammates questions like: -What does your summer look like? What will be different for you? -What would be helpful for me to know and how can I best support you?(e.g. moving a team meeting or 1:1 time slot)?

Great advice from Sacha for any industry. Make CIC started as a small studio for 5 friends. Too often I see would-be entrepreneurs or founders who only have eyes for the finished product. It’s foolish. The best thing you can do is start doing something, small, managed risk, expect to be adaptable, be responsive to opportunities and most of all just get on with something/anything. There is a difference between having a vision and being delusional.

Parklife started as a one-day student festival for a few thousand people. The Warehouse Project started as a few parties we threw because we wanted to do something different. My advice for people early in their events careers…don’t trip yourself up by trying to run before you’ve walked. Work your way up, get things wrong, change them and then get something completely different wrong the next time. You’ve got plenty of time to get things right.

It's comical how similar going back to school is to starting a new job, especially when that transition happens near the end of summer. The first-day jitters aren't things only students experience. We've all had to enter new opportunities with an uneasy feeling and humbly navigate unfamiliar surroundings. You have to learn: Who your new boss (or teacher) is... 🧑🏫 What time to start your commute (or when the bus will pick you up)... 🚌 Where your new office (or classroom) is... 🏫 You have to prepare by: Picking out the perfect first-day outfit... 👔 Gathering snacks and photos for your desk (or locker)... 🥨 Making sure you have your favorite pens and sticky notes (or school supplies)... 🖊️ And maybe most importantly: You have to develop your team spirit... 👏 It's fun to reflect on how I felt as a student, remembering being a prideful representative of my school. Experiencing those feelings is even more important to me now as a working professional. I place a lot of importance on loving what I do for work and feeling excited to represent the company I work for, and you should, too! If you're one of the incredible people shaping minds in schools everywhere, I hope you had a great start to the year. 🎉

A Career of Making Dreams Come True Last week, I had the privilege of returning to my old school as a guest speaker for the 6th-year pupils. It was a chance to give back to the place that gave me so much. During the talk, we went on a picture journey through the key transitions of my career – amazing adventures, incredible people (and a few not so great), tough choices, and real challenges. The Q&A at the end is always a highlight, especially when they ask the tricky ones: ‘What was your best job, and why?’ Setting up and running the centre at Kenmore – a mix of fun, adventure, responsibility, and personal growth. ‘What would you do differently?’ Leave sooner when the vibe had faded, and not let meaningless people upset me. ‘What was your hardest job?’ A job that conflicted with my personal values. It was miserable. Life is full of transitions, and as I navigate yet another, it was nice to reflect on where the journey has taken me – and where it might go next. (A summary slide from the talk is attached.)
