⏰ ALARM bells are ringing: How can we bridge the gap between ambition and action towards net zero goals? 📉 Findings from the joint AIA/LCRIG annual ALARM survey highlight concerning trends in decarbonising highways amongst UK local authorities. 🗣️ David Giles, chair of the Asphalt Industry Alliance, and Paula Claytonsmith, CEO of Local Council Roads Innovation Group (LCRIG), chaired a panel at Strictly Highways 2024 to discuss newly released findings of the survey. 💡 Key insights: 🔹 90% of local authorities in England and Wales have net zero targets, with over half aiming for 2030. 🔹Only 11% have updated their highway asset management plans to include net zero principles, and only 6% have established targets to reduce carbon emissions from road surfacing materials. ⏩ Read about the discussion here: https://lnkd.in/ehbsDtVf 🚀 The challenge of reimagining road materials and implementing sustainable alternatives within budget constraints is evident amongst local councils. 🌐 Already, several forward-thinking authorities have partnered with LCM to transform the carbon footprint of their road resurfacing projects. ♻️ By using ACLA®, our carbon-negative aggregate for asphalt, they have permanently removed~800 kg CO2e/tonne from the atmosphere! 💧 ACLA® is a transformative drop-in solution which can be incorporated in quantities as low as 3-8% to achieve net zero asphalt. 🛣️ Passionate about decarbonising construction, LCM are proud to be supporting change-makers across the UK in turning climate declarations into decisive action! ⏩ Learn more about their impact here: https://lnkd.in/eezFfd7P. #NetZero #TransportInnovation #SustainableConstruction #UKRoads #LowCarbonMaterials

🎯 The impact of our work: Cutting carbon emissions of a road resurfacing project by 68%. 🟡 We partnered with London Borough of Redbridge, Kenson Highways, and Tarmac for resurfacing works at Lodge Hill Road in London. ⚡ The project incorporated ACLA®, our carbon-negative decarbonisation solution for asphalt. 🚧 ACLA® was used in the binder course asphalt, which ensured the entire middle layer of the road was net zero. ❗ Using ACLA® lowered the project's carbon footprint by 68%. That is a saving of carbon emissions equivalent to: 🚗 Driving an average UK car 17,400 miles. 🚌 A round-trip journey to Los Angeles for two people. ⬇️ For more details, read the case study linked in the comments below ⬇️ 📒 As net zero rises up the regulatory agenda, it is more important than ever for hard-to-abate sectors to deploy decarbonisation solutions. 🟨 From Durham County Council to National Highways, action is already taking place at regional and national levels. 💬 Want to decarbonise your next project? The Australian Flexible Pavement Association (AfPA) hosted an event aimed at advancing sustainable infrastructure with its industry briefing on low-carbon bitumen solutions, held on Friday, June 7, 2024, in Brisbane. With growing concerns about climate change, the construction sector faces increasing pressure to adopt more sustainable practices. Recognising this movement’s importance, AfPA organised the industry briefing to foster dialogue and collaboration towards achieving industry-wide decarbonisation goals. Attended by over 200 industry professionals, the event saw key stakeholders from the road construction sector participating, sharing insights and expertise on sustainable pavement solutions. Discussions revolved around identifying alternative materials and methods to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions associated with road construction and maintenance. Yesterday, six of the UK's major Civil Infrastructure Suppliers annouced major commitments to ensure a reduction in carbon emissions: "Anglian Water Services, Heathrow, Lower Thames Crossing, National Highways, NWG (Northumbrian Water Group) and Sellafield Ltd have committed to scale-back use of the biggest contributors to CO₂ emissions – diesel, steel, and concrete." - Construction Enquirer On Earth Day, we shared our plan for Steel Net Zero by 2050 and our plan to cut our CO2 emissions from 24.4g to 9g per £1 of sales by 2030. However, our strategies to improve our sustainability go far beyond this! J&D Pierce is committed to: 🌳 Maintaining our current environmental accreditations - ISO 14001 and FSC. ⚡Continuing our Energy Reduction Programme including using 100% renewables, LED lighting, and sensor based reduction systems. Plus installation of PV panels and utilisation of alternative heating sources across our facilities. ♻️ Continuing and expanding on our Waste Reduction Program including reduction in scrap metals, 100% reuse of timber (excluding damages), and enhanced recycling across our facilities. 🚚 Continuing and enhancing our Sustainable Haulage Scheme including use of modern and fuel efficient vehicles, transition from diesel to HVO fuels, use of electric vehicles wherever possible, and minimal haulage through our comprehensive in-house vertical service. 🔥Offering reduced and lowest carbon steel production options to all of our clients utilising electric arc furnaces. This can lead to huge reductions in a project's carbon footprint. 🏗️ Operating our first zero carbon site. Much of this is already well underway but we hope to expand on this and reduce our carbon output as soon as we can! #steelzero50 #netzeronation Net Zero Nation #supplierresponsibility #sustainability #environmentalism #sustainableconstruction

Did you know the built environment is responsible for 25% of the UK’s total greenhouse gas emissions? With timber frame construction reducing CO2 emissions by 40% compared to masonry construction, the government has recognised the opportunity to reach net zero by 2050. Pinewood Structures are pioneers in sustainability. We adopt a circular economy, by using renewable resources from manufacturing to construction. The construction industry is responsible for a lot of environmental damage. Concrete has been described as ‘the most destructive material on earth’, with a carbon footprint that would make an airline gasp. It’s beyond time that the construction industry faced up to these hard truths and started making changes. We are committed to becoming sustainable in every way that we can 🍃 We try our hardest to work in a way that won’t compromise future generations. We’ve aligned ourselves with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to achieve this.
