The LMNT Scandal. What to Know There's been a relatively viral scandal around the company LMNT, which makes a popular brand of electrolytes. The brand is built on a promise of "no sugar" and "no dodgy ingredients." However, it was recently revealed that the electrolytes contain maltodextrin, a high glycemic index sugar. Initially, one of the companies co-founders said the product contained "no maltodextrin." Then, the narrative was revised to it contains 4 mg maltodextrin. However, it was then clarified that the product actually contains 250-550 mg maltodextrin. To be clear, this is still a small dose (~1/2 gram or ~2 Calories from Carbs) Nevertheless, maltodextrin is not listen on the nutrition label, but rather cloaked in the category of "Natural Flavor," as it serves structurally as a "flavor carrier." This "labeling loophole" is how the company "got away with" omitting maltodextrin in their ingredients list. I place "got away with" in quotes because I prefer to give the benefit of the doubt, rather than assume malicious intent. That said, people appear furious about the lack of transparency and what is perceived as manipulative marketing. As an aside, and on the term "Natural Flavor" -- "natural" is not legally defined in the United States; therefore, there are many loopholes that allow manufacturers to add artificial chemicals to natural flavors. It's a sad state of affairs. But the fact of the matter is that the only way to really know what you're putting in your body is to make it yourself. The coffee market is extremely competitive, with the flavor profile being the key differentiator for consumers. Whether the product is instant coffee, a brew capsule or ground coffee, the importance of package integrity is similar. The standard vacuum decay leak test method (ASTM F2338), developed using PTI's VeriPac instruments, is recognized by the FDA as a consensus standard for package integrity testing.
