Researchers have discovered dingoes are deterred by the urine of male dingoes in their prime. A study of the chemical makeup of the urine has identified five compounds of interest. The compounds could be used to develop non-lethal management tools for the native species. #wildlifewednesday #hfnef #wildlife #animalsandwildlife #dingos

🐾 Did you know that animals traveled up to 73% longer distances during lockdowns? A recent study published in the journal Science found that animals ventured further within a span of 10 days during the strict lockdown period, compared to the same time the previous year when no lockdown was in place. Additionally, animals were found to be on average 36% closer to roads. According to Tucker, one of the authors of the study, "This is probably because those roads were quieter during strict lockdowns." Now, visitors can see wetlands within the primeval forest in the park. The wetland water plants thrive with all shapes, blooming with yellow, white, and purple flowers. Various waterbirds, including egrets, herons, and grey cranes, leisurely enjoy their habitat, with at least six different species present. Statistics show that the park is home to over 800 species of animals and more than 2,000 species of plants. In recent years, the number of babies of red pandas, black bears, red muntjacs, and macaques has been steadily increasing thanks to efforts in ecological protection and animal breeding. Now, walking through the forest, you can often see red pandas walking slowly by and gibbons joyfully swinging among the branches. Did you know: 🦦 Wetlands are home to 40% of the world's biodiversity 🐤 They are nurseries and breeding grounds for many species 🐢 They are places of shelter for 1/3rd of the world's threatened species Wetlands are some of our most productive ecosystems. From peatlands to mangroves, wetlands provide food, shelter and breeding grounds for an incredible diversity of plant and animal species. #WeNeedWetlands for people and nature. #GenerationRestoration #ForWetlands

#CMSCOP14 | Migratory behaviour is found in all major taxonomic groups of animals, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and insects. The reasons why animals migrate are complex and can be driven by a combination of factors, including tracking of seasonal resources and favourable climatic conditions, and seeking optimal breeding sites. While many animal migrations occur in a regular and predictable pattern, some animal migrations can happen irregularly over longer timeframes, depending on the species and their specific ecological requirements. Some species, such as sea turtles, undertake long solitary migrations, while others migrate collectively in vast numbers. #WetlandConservation #WetlandsMatter

Whether an animal is protected or not depends not only on its species but also on its specific type. Take the deer, for example—there are many types, and not all of them are classified as protected under Indonesian law. Their conservation and utilization differ, making it essential for us to be mindful of preserving their existence. During our field trip last June, our team Rusdian Hafiz, Maudy Miya Andini, Dinda Farras Haniya, and Rasya Jauhar was fortunate enough to witness the Sambar Deer up close at the Lamandau breeding center. Dive deeper into this exploration below! #iHiConsulting #Deer #Animal #Conservation #Awareness

“The Captivity Trap – Looking Beyond Zoos, a Question of Morality” Are zoos misleading us about their real role? “Do they play a role in preserving endangered species? In 2013 only 23 percent of the species held by 10,000 zoos globally were judged to be at risk of extinction – so the vast majority in captivity were not there because their existence was threatened in the wild. Do zoos provide valuable educational opportunities? A survey of 2,800 schoolchildren visiting London Zoo found that only 34 percent demonstrated some sort of positive learning experience. A minority actually came away with more misunderstandings about animal species and habitats than they had previously held. Zoos often exaggerate their contribution to valuable field conservation work – figures cited by Travers compared the 231million dollars annually spent by the American Zoo Association on field conservation work with the 4.9 billion dollars that they committed to operations and construction in 2018.” https://lnkd.in/g-Qqc7XJ #captiveconservation #nomorezoos #TheConservationGameMovie

Day 4/30 of Academic Journal Study “Wildlife predation by dogs in Madagascar” Leandra Merz | Akhil R. Kshirsagar | Radoniaina R. Rafaliarison | Tsiky Rajaonarivelo | Zach J. Farris | Zoavina Randriana | Kim Valenta It is common in Nigerian homes to see cats roaming around, as they are popularly used as a control method against rodents. Dogs are also used in different regions of the world as a control method against livestock depredation by wildlife. I read this paper a while ago, but I enjoyed it a lot, so I decided to read it again today. The study area was in Madagascar. It basically highlights how domesticated dogs (Canis lupus familiaris), popularly known as ‘Ekuke’ in Nigerian lingo, can mitigate or complicate human-wildlife conflict and biodiversity conservation. Being a dog owner myself, I understand the behavioral nuances that the Canis lupus familiaris breed has. Data was collected from 525 dog owners in 26 communities in Andasibe-Mantadia National Park and other communities over a few years. Their responses to questions regarding how well their dogs were fed, how much time the dogs wandered into the forest, and whether the dogs were used for hunting or protection, presented a balanced perspective of the situation. Summarily, keeping the dogs fed, restrained at home, and away from the forest was found to likely reduce the killing of wildlife by the dogs.

The Pallas cat is one of the target species actively monitored by Wildlife Initiative researchers. A detailed monitoring program has been conducted in Bayan-Onjuul since 2019. However, in the last two years, a notable decrease in the Pallas cat's population density was observed, likely linked to the decline of his primary prey species. The reasons behind this decline are still under study. Nevertheless, the trampling behaviour of abundant livestock occurring in the area may exert a key role in reducing the available habitat of rodents. - photo credit: Wildlife Initiative visit www.wildlifeinitiative.org - #wildlifeinitiative #wildlife #species #wildspecies #nature #wildnature #ecosystem #environment #biodiversity #ecology #habitat #research #wildliferesearch #conservation #wildlifeconservation #monitoring #wildlifemonitoring #iucn #cites #threatenedspecies #threatenedanimals #endangeredspecies #endangeredanimals #cameratraps #cameratrapping #livestock #mammals #mammalia #carnivores #predators #felids #felidae #wildfelids #wildcats #pallasscat #otocolobusmanul #bayanonjuul #mongolia #asia
