Whether an animal is protected or not depends not only on its species but also on its specific type. Take the deer, for example—there are many types, and not all of them are classified as protected under Indonesian law. Their conservation and utilization differ, making it essential for us to be mindful of preserving their existence. During our field trip last June, our team Rusdian Hafiz, Maudy Miya Andini, Dinda Farras Haniya, and Rasya Jauhar was fortunate enough to witness the Sambar Deer up close at the Lamandau breeding center. A well balanced article about coexistence between wolves and people in northern Portugal. Attitudes towards wolves tend to be more positive where there has been a continuous history of coexistence, and where the tradition of using livestock guarding dogs to protect flocks has been maintained. What lessons can be learned to revive this culture (most countries in Europe have their own traditional livestock guarding dog breeds) where wolves are returning after a sometimes long absence?

NATIONAL PANDA DAY On March 16, National Panda Day draws attention to one of the world's unique bears. Pandas are also one of the world's most endangered and adored animals. Conservationists and animal lovers alike spread the word about the increasing efforts of the international community dedicated to protecting and restoring habitats. #NationalPandaDay Native to China, giant pandas are members of the Bear (Ursidae) family. Their rapidly shrinking habitat is a major cause for concern. As an endangered species, successful panda breeding programs are rare. In the wild, there are approximately only 1,864 (according to the World Wide Fund for Nature) and 100 living in zoos around the world.

Researchers have discovered dingoes are deterred by the urine of male dingoes in their prime. A study of the chemical makeup of the urine has identified five compounds of interest. The compounds could be used to develop non-lethal management tools for the native species. #wildlifewednesday #hfnef #wildlife #animalsandwildlife #dingos

Day 4/30 of Academic Journal Study “Wildlife predation by dogs in Madagascar” Leandra Merz | Akhil R. Kshirsagar | Radoniaina R. Rafaliarison | Tsiky Rajaonarivelo | Zach J. Farris | Zoavina Randriana | Kim Valenta It is common in Nigerian homes to see cats roaming around, as they are popularly used as a control method against rodents. Dogs are also used in different regions of the world as a control method against livestock depredation by wildlife. I read this paper a while ago, but I enjoyed it a lot, so I decided to read it again today. The study area was in Madagascar. It basically highlights how domesticated dogs (Canis lupus familiaris), popularly known as ‘Ekuke’ in Nigerian lingo, can mitigate or complicate human-wildlife conflict and biodiversity conservation. Being a dog owner myself, I understand the behavioral nuances that the Canis lupus familiaris breed has. Data was collected from 525 dog owners in 26 communities in Andasibe-Mantadia National Park and other communities over a few years. Their responses to questions regarding how well their dogs were fed, how much time the dogs wandered into the forest, and whether the dogs were used for hunting or protection, presented a balanced perspective of the situation. Summarily, keeping the dogs fed, restrained at home, and away from the forest was found to likely reduce the killing of wildlife by the dogs.
