In 1804, the world’s population reached 1 billion. ⬆️ 200 years later, in 2011, we reached 7 billion. ⬆️ Now, we’re at 7.9 billion. ⬆️ By 2030 our global population is expected to grow to 8.5 billion and by 2100, we may reach 10.9 billion. ⬆️ The number of people on this planet is increasing exponentially, driven by longer life expectancy, changes in fertility rates, and increasing urbanization. These megatrends in population affect economic development, employment, incomes distribution, poverty and social protections. Yesterday was World Population Day, an international day which focuses attention on the urgency and importance of population issues. More than 40% of women around the world, for example, cannot make decisions on sexual and reproductive health. In West and Central Africa, with United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), we are addressing the barriers women and girls face in accessing reproductive health care. We’ll be developing an SBCC campaign to raise awareness and increase demand for sexual and reproductive health services and also address men who play a role in decision-making related to women’s reproductive health. #reproductivehealth #sbc #westcentralafrica

Equitable and sustainable access to human rights-based sexual and reproductive health interventions and information remains beyond the reach of many – especially marginalized women, adolescent #girls and those living in humanitarian crises and conflict zones. The latest data show that more than half of women of reproductive age cannot make their own informed #decisions about whether or when to become pregnant, and many still lack the #autonomy and agency to fully exercise their reproductive #rights. This is why we need to raise our voices more! 🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️ Coalition for Women's Health in Africa (COWHA) | UN Women | United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) United Nations | Tiko | Jhpiego | Organon | Nigeria Health Watch | Brands on a Mission | VillageReach | MSI Ethiopia Reproductive Choices

Thanks so much Dr. Onikepe Owolabi for sharing your insights and perspectives on advancing women’s bodily autonomy, as part of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) signature side-event during the #HLPF. During the event partners highlighted issues and showcased efforts to advance SDG target 5.6 “Ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights as agreed in accordance with the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development #ICPD and the Beijing Platform for Action and the outcome documents of their review conferences” through the measurement of indicators: 5.6.1 - Proportion of women aged 15-49 years who make their own informed decisions regarding sexual relations, contraceptive use and reproductive health care 5.6.2 - Number of countries with laws and regulations that guarantee full and equal access to women and men aged 15 years and older to sexual and reproductive health care, information and education
Last week at the UN, we joined a conversation convened by United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to discuss progress on women’s sexual and reproductive agency in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals. Onikepe Owolabi, our Director of International Research, spoke about our latest research approaches, highlighting the crucial role of person-centered data in advancing sexual & reproductive health outcomes for all people. For example, accounting for women’s expressed desires can unmask nuanced reasons for not using a contraceptive method. Intent, choice and satisfaction become important factors in understanding and supporting people’s health behaviors. Inclusive, accurate representations of people’s lived experiences are key to empowering people to define their well-being and achieve bodily autonomy. This #WorldHealthDay read how Young Lives’ evidence shows that, despite significant improvements in sexual and reproductive health in Ethiopia, inequalities and entrenched patriarchal norms continue to disadvantage adolescent girls and young women, particularly those from poor households and in rural areas. Integrating Peace and Adolescent and Youth Sexual and Reproductive Health (AYH-SRH): I had the opportunity of participating in a workshop that focused on integrating peace-building with Adolescent and Youth Sexual and Reproductive Health (AYH-SRH) in Bishofu town yesterday. These were the key points from the discussions we had: 1. Involving youth in peace-building: Youth have a critical role in peace-building and it is important to engage them in conflict resolution and advocacy. 2. Making the health system resilient: SRH programs are at risk whenever conflicts arise. 3. Influencing policymakers: Shaping existing policies in integrating AYH-SRH and peace-building requires strong advocacy. 4. Developing a National Action Plan (NAP): The focus was on developing a NAP that aligns both peace-building and AYH-SRH objectives. We discussed about how such a plan can be integrated into national policies for long-term sustainability. 5. Monitoring and Evaluation: The workshop stressed the importance of refining and strengthening the plan through continuous feedback, evaluation, and adaptation. The goal is to make sure that the plan is actionable, measurable, with clear M&E mechanisms to track progress, outcomes, and challenges. * One thing that stood out to me was how often these important conversations remain just conversations. Too frequently, the agendas created after such meetings get lost or forgotten once the event ends. It's time we shift from discussion to implementation. We need to focus on evaluating and realizing policies that can lead to real, lasting change so that they don't just stay on paper. Let’s work together and do our part in making a sustainable change for our country, Ethiopia. #YouthEmpowerment #PeaceBuilding #AYHSRH #MonitoringAndEvaluation #PolicyInfluence
