📢 UN Women is inviting women’s rights organizations working on ending violence against women to participate in a global survey for a shared advocacy agenda as part of the ACT to End Violence against Women and Girls. How can we make digital spaces safer for women and girls? 🌐 EIGE has released a new policy brief on tackling cyber violence against women and girls, revealing:   ▪️ Women and girls are more likely to be targets of cyber violence, which can cause physical, sexual, and psychological harm, as well as financial issues.  ▪️ Platforms lack robust safety policies and rarely align with human rights laws or gender-sensitive practices.  ▪️ Inconsistent definitions and limited collaboration across platforms make tackling cyber violence even harder.  ▪️ A lack of sex disaggregated data hides the true scale of this gender-based cyber violence. 💡 The solutions are clear: greater transparency, gender-sensitive policies, and better collaboration across platforms. Today marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and I am honoured to have participated as a panelist with my colleagues Sibonakaliso Shabangu and Stefanie Finkenbeiner in a discussion that underscores the urgent need for awareness and action in our communities. The latest report on femicides is alarming: globally, 85,000 women and girls were intentionally killed in 2023, with 60% of these tragic losses occurring at the hands of intimate partners or family members. This statistic is a wake-up call. It’s crucial that we raise awareness not just at home and work, but everywhere we go. Governments, in all states must prioritize this issue beyond mere agenda talk. We need robust prevention measures that ensure the safety of women and empower men to be allies in this fight. It is inspiring to see men stepping up—as demonstrated by our male sponsor Jean-Marc Ricca at today’s event. Let’s speak up, let’s listen and acknowledge the prevalence of this crisis! As Kenya celebrates Jamhuri Day today, we are reminded of the ideals of resilience, freedom, and justice that this day symbolizes. However, for many activists—especially women advocating for an end to femicide and SGBV—those ideals feel far from reach. On the last day of #16DaysOfActivism, women across Kenya protested against femicide, yet their voices were met with tear gas and violence from those sworn to protect them. This echoes the same harassment faced earlier this year during the End Femicide protests. The right to peacefully demand justice was trampled, and the message was clear: we still have a long way to go. At The Femiscope Initiative, we mourn the continued marginalization, harassment, and silencing of women who dare to demand safety and equality. Jamhuri Day should be a celebration of freedom and justice for all, yet this year, it feels hollow. We stand in solidarity with all women and activists who continue to fight for a better Kenya.
