TRAIN TO THE BAROSSA In 2014, I went to the World Cup in Brazil to support Australia and was fortunate to see one of the best goals of the World Cup by Tim Cahill against the Netherlands. On our return trip to Australia, we went to San Francisco and went on the Napa Valley Wine Train. Now, to get onto the Napa Valley Wine Train, the quickest way is to drive for approximately an hour to connect with the Napa Valley Wine Train. When I returned to Australia, a colleague and I started to re-explore the opportunity to have the Barossa Regional Wine Train and developed the attached concept in more detail in 2016. What excited me was being involved in the last stage of the Adelaide Convention Centre Development; I could imagine some 3000 delegates walking out of the convention centre, getting on a Train that would take them to one of the most highly prized wine regions in the world, without having to drive: in just under 90 mins —enhancing the whole experience. There are very few places in the world that could offer this. Further, this would also align with the projected population growth /HOUSING demand and enable the expansion of rail services to Nuriootpa, servicing the excellent tourism opportunity and providing an expanded rail passenger service. For various reasons, we haven't embraced rail. Is it time to embrace rail? With Gather Round being such a success and AFL football now going to the Barossa, imagine going there by train. I also plan to go to football at Mt Barker by train one day. Dreams are great and become even more astounding when they become reality. #rail #tourism #infrastructure #housing

Yesterday's Conference was our biggest yet, with 241 delegates attending from across New Zealand and Australasia, to discuss crucial points relating to the future success and sustainability of the industry here in New Zealand. Thank you to all members and contributing speakers who joined us for this important day. In positive news, we celebrated our most successful season ever, with a well managed mix of small, medium and large ships visiting ports all around the nation, including the successful inaugural cruise season in Whangarei. Customer sentiment for New Zealand and Australasia remains high, with all New Zealand ports receiving great feedback and scores from visitors. However, on the back of this record season, our industry is now facing headwinds for the coming years, due to the loss of winter cruising and a reduction in scheduled port calls for the next two years, thanks to a combined effect of increased and proposed further increases in fees, levies and pricing impacting New Zealand's competitiveness as a destination. While not all discussion was easy, we are pleased to report that there was positive progress and consensus around the need to find a sustainable path forward. Roger Gray, Chief Executive Officer Port of Auckland, said the Port had heard the industry’s message around fees, and will be evaluating future pricing with a view to better supporting the industry needs. We look forward to working collaboratively with all involved to ensure we as a nation continue to benefit from welcoming cruise. Thank you Cruise Weekly for your excellent coverage of discussion at one of these expert panels held as part of our NZCA Conference yesterday. "Is football really worth it?” I asked Rik. ⚽ Even though it’s been raining most days, it’s supposedly summer here in Europe. 🌧️🌦️ Every four years, this means the European Championship football is being played. 🏆 Rik, of course, is watching all of it. This year, Germany is hosting the tournament, and it's expected to boost tourism revenue by 1 billion euros. 💰 While that sounds impressive, it's only a 0.1% increase in the German economy for this quarter. This raises an important question: is it worth it? 🤔 Events like this bring a wave of overtourism. 🌊 Yes, accommodations, restaurants, and bars see a temporary boost, but the benefits are short-lived and concentrated in specific areas. As a Dutchy, with our team reaching as far as the semi-finals, I understand the excitement. I even enjoyed a few matches in a packed, lively orange bar. 🦁 But how would I feel if I were a German local? 🇩🇪 Despite efforts to spread matches across the country and promote train travel, it still feels like overtourism. What are your thoughts on mega sports events and overtourism? Share your thoughts in the comments! ⚽ #goodtourism #overtourism #sportstourism #europeanchampionships #soccer #positiveimpact #responsibletravel Good Tourism Institute
