In the last 5 years, the past 3 NBA teams that won a championship were homegrown. Let us explain.. Someone is considered to be homegrown when they’ve spent a significant amount of time in one area. Ex: Growing up in Denver for the majority of your life or playing for one single NBA team. You’ll see a clear trend when you look at the past three NBA champions: developing and nurturing your talent is the key to winning. While cities like Denver continue to grow and invite external talent to do business here, it’s also common for NBA teams to sign players from other teams. We at Ednium are making the case that reinvesting into homegrown talent is the way cities need to move forward. The Celtics, Nuggets, and Warriors get it. I apologize for the long post, but I felt this was worth sharing with my LI community As the World Series approaches, I’m reminded of how sports can transcend beyond the field and impact communities in powerful ways. Fernando Valenzuela, to many, is more than just a Dodger. He’s a symbol of representation, resilience, and healing for the Latino community. In the 1980s, at a time of tension between the Latino community and the Los Angeles Dodgers, Valenzuela was signed. For the first time, many of us saw someone who looked like us playing at the highest level. I remember my parents talking about baseball around the kitchen table, something that had never happened before. It wasn’t just about the game—it was about seeing someone from our community on that stage, representing us. The relationship between the Latino community and the Dodgers has deep roots, with a history that includes the building of Dodger Stadium in Chavez Ravine, a painful chapter for many. But with Valenzuela, the connection began to heal, and Dodger pride grew stronger in our community. When you hear an Angeleno speak passionately about being a Dodger fan, it’s not just about the team—it’s about history, pride, and representation. This brings me to why diversity and representation matter so much, especially in the workplace. At Harbor Freight Tools we are committed to building a championship team, one that reflects the strength and diversity of our communities. I am passionate about working here because I see that there is space for someone like me—a proud Latina—to contribute, grow, and help build something meaningful. What does street hockey have to do with organizational culture? When I was a kid, many years ago, I played a lot of street hockey. It was so much fun. Being "picked" as we formed each team was our starting point. Once the teams were formed we quickly figured out our plays and positions. We each had different skills and styles of play. While we were playing we were totally focused on doing our best. Our goal (pun intended) was clear. Beat the other team! After the game finished, we discussed what went well, what we might do differently next game, and when we would play again. Today this memory came back to me. I started thinking about the parallel with today's work environment. We chose to play (autonomy), we played with friends (team dynamics), we knew the game (results), we respected each others abilities (diversity), we welcomed everyone to play (inclusion), and if someone got hurt we stopped to make sure they were OK (well-being). Imagine what our workplace would be like if we applied similar principles to our professional lives. Game on! #culture #teamwork #workplace

I’ve always been a big sports fan, even though I was not that good at it (except, maybe, soccer 🙂). Apart from the thrill of the game itself, it's the strategies and mind-games teams play that have been drawing me to them. For example - lately, I’ve been thinking—what if we could apply the strategies from basketball recruiting to business hiring? 🏀💼 Turns out, there are some pretty cool parallels! From scouting for potential to building team chemistry, the way basketball teams approach recruitment has a lot to teach us about hiring the right talent in business. Love or hate Boston sports - the Celtics had quite a run and got that long-waited title last night. My favorite part? It was a clear demonstration of how to build a champion team. The MVP wasn't just math - the MVP was a team strategy. 1. Recruit for a collection of skills - not a “rockstar” or MVP. Look holistically at your team - so you get the diversity of talent that can work as a cohesive whole, bringing different strengths to bear and compensating for areas of weakness. 2. Work hard to retain people and grow their skills - as a team. Don’t stay stagnant - your team needs stretch opportunities as a collective and as individual players. Keep them moving. 3. Trust the skills and data - over personalities and headlines. Flashy players are fun to watch on Instagram but numbers don’t lie. Teams beat the individual. https://lnkd.in/gY694pkM

Today is National Play Ball Day, we are reminded of the importance of teamwork and collaboration - principles that are integral to both sports and the IT industry. So as we celebrate National Play Ball Day, let's remember the power of teamwork in achieving our goals, both on the field and in the world of IT.

Culture and the future of the workforce:  I saw this article last year after following the Women's College World Series, which Oklahoma won in one of the most dominant seasons ever.  The thing that stuck out to me was it sounded like the team culture, more than success,  was their best recruiting tool.  A few things that stand out in the article:  - Intentionality of the players to set the culture: as someone who isn't a supervisor but has some leadership responsibility, that's a good reminder to take initiative in developing the culture.   - The value placed on people.  - Wisdom to recognize there are changes in the team culture each year.  - The value of workplace culture in recruiting the workforce of the future.  "We're all competitors, but I think the human side is something that's special that we don't really give much credit to of how everyone is so unique." “But we really rally around the fact that — we're people too."   https://lnkd.in/geEHc-gc
