Check out which examples for #circularsolutions you can see in your city this weekend when enjoying local events, markets and gastronomy. It was a part of the #CircularCityChallenge this year to get inspired by already existing solutions. We know that we need to make events, gastronomy and local markets more sustainable and circular by reducing the food and packaging waste and motivate for a better usage of the resources, including water. Two solutions could convince the municipal partners as jury of the Circular City Challenge 2023 in the area “Events & Gastronomy”, focusing on the events with circular (zero waste) options as well as establishing a uniform reusable strategy in gastronomy for easy coordination in city/district. As a resident of Brazil, married to a Dane, and parent to two spirited half-Viking children, Denmark holds a special place in my heart. Thus, it’s with great admiration that I share a remarkable story unfolding in the streets of Aarhus, Denmark – a city’s resolute campaign against single-use waste, with coffee cups serving as the initial battleground. Could this herald the dawn of a “Reuse Renaissance”? In the bustling urban milieu, where glass bottles, plastic packaging, and disposable coffee cups once cluttered the sidewalks, a resounding call for change echoed from businesses and civic leaders alike. Witnessing the mounting piles of waste, they united in resolve, initiating a pioneering solution. Enter the innovative “reverse vending scheme,” a groundbreaking endeavor catalyzing a cultural shift. With an initial focus on coffee cups, this initiative builds upon Denmark’s esteemed tradition of deposit refund systems. Collaboration emerged as the cornerstone, with over 40 establishments joining forces, and 25 collection machines strategically deployed across the city. Yet, the journey towards sustainability encounters formidable obstacles. The allure of single-use convenience often eclipses the appeal of reusability. To surmount this challenge, two pivotal solutions beckon: expansion and policy innovation. Inspired by Denmark’s success, I am eager to replicate this concept here in Brazil. It’s incredibly inspiring to witness the effectiveness of such initiatives, and I believe they hold immense potential for our communities. Achieving carbon neutrality in hospital operations demands collective action and knowledge-sharing across sectors. With a commitment to halving CO2 emissions by 2035, Danish Regions' collaborative regional strategy, 'Grønne Hospitaler' (Green Hospitals), is paving the way for sustainable healthcare practices. Region Midtjylland takes the lead in two pivotal areas of sustainability within this strategy, notably focusing on sustainable practices in surgical operations. This initiative targets the reduction of both CO2 emissions and waste generated during surgical procedures, spearheaded by the Center for Sustainable Hospitals in collaboration with Aarhus University Hospital. To understand why 8️⃣8️⃣% of german households accumulate 𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫, we went 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 (literarily) and visited a variety of households in and outside Berlin 🇩🇪.    🔎 What did we find out?    📦 Most clutter accumulates in basements before expanding to other parts of households.
