Today, we celebrate Mabo Day, marking the final day of National Reconciliation Week and 32 years since the historic High Court decision that introduced Native Title into Australian law and overturned the myth of ‘terra nullius’.
Mabo Day is a reminder that the journey toward acknowledging and respecting the rights of First Nations people is ongoing. Although Native Title was a significant milestone for First Nations rights, there are still systemic barriers that challenge Traditional Owners from accessing economic self-determination on Native Title lands.
We encourage you to take the time to reflect on and learn about this historic date through the resource below from First Nations Foundation, which explores the story of Mer Island man Eddie Koiki Mabo and his ten-year legal pursuit.
ASFI was established to realign Australia’s financial system so that it supports a more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive Australia. Recognition of the First Nations people of Australia and support for better outcomes for First Nations peoples are integral foundations to achieving that mission.
This week, we explored the story of Eddie Koiki Mabo and sat down with Senior Counsel and Head of Chambers at Michael Kirby Chambers, Greg McIntyre, who defended Mabo throughout his ten-year legal pursuit to rightfully claim back land belonging to the Meriam people, who have lived on the Island of Mer for over 60,000 years.
