The drive towards #netzero, as well as a cultural shift towards healthy indoor spaces has contributed to a rise in bio-based materials. Forthcoming regulation is reinforcing this trend and innovative natural products are making it possible. But lingering questions remain: will the concept of plant-based, which has attained significant appeal in other industries, gain mainstream status in construction and real estate? How exactly will we move away from conventional materials and practices? What forces are likely to help or hinder a more nature-based approach to buildings? Richard Francis delves into all this and more in his latest article in the plant-based places series, The Future Of ESG: What Is The Role Of Plant-based Places? Earlier this month, our Responsible Business APAC Lead, Jessica Lily Travers, participated in two panel discussions on driving sustainability during the Sydney Build Expo 2024. 🌿 🌟 Here are her five insights from the event: • Futureproofing Designs: It’s critical we design for longevity and adaptability. A building can’t be sustainable if it’s not being used in a few years’ time. • Social Value Needs Just as Much Focus: Explore reporting emissions and social value impacts in project financials to allow them to inform key capex decisions. • Embracing Embodied Carbon: It’s our biggest challenge in construction. Look out for organisations like #MECLA, who are driving much-needed collaboration. • Go Beyond Greenstar Equivalency: Transparency matters - there are too many loopholes when the full certification isn’t targeted. • Empowering Change: Policy catch-up is necessary, but we can’t wait. Every project has the power to drive a more responsible delivery. #MaceConsult #Sustainability #APAC

With buildings responsible for nearly 40% of global #carbon emissions, adopting the #LEED O+M (Operations & Maintenance) framework is key to decarbonizing existing structures and advancing toward #netzero. It also facilitates benchmarking and performance tracking, both of which are crucial in any organization's transition toward #netzero. At Burj Khalifa LLC , the world’s tallest building, we applied #LEED O+M to achieve #LEED Platinum certification. This required a collaborative and integrative approach between Farnek Services LLC and Emaar, tackling the unique challenges of decarbonizing such a large and complex building. We showcased this achievement at the recent Emirates Environmental Group event, demonstrating how even the tallest buildings can decarbonize and align with broader #ESG goals. It’s proof that with the right framework, #sustainability in the #builtenvironment is not only achievable but impactful. It was also a privilege to join a panel alongside industry leaders Haithem IbraheemJason Carlow Sarfraz DairkeeThanveer Hussain where we discussed key factors in decarbonizing skyscrapers, including: 1. Shifting mindsets 2. Embracing innovation and adaptability 3. Challenging conventional practices 4. Fostering collaboration and stakeholder engagement Above all, #commitment emerged as the most critical element in achieving #netzero and sustainable success. Special thank Ms. Habiba Al Mar’ashi , my inspiring role model, for her ongoing contributions to the sustainability movement and her impactful leadership in driving the market forward. #Sustainability #LEEDPlatinum #NetZero #BurjKhalifa #GreenBuildings #ESG #Collaboration #Decarbonization #BuiltEnvironment #LEEDOM #EEG
