Last week, I had the privilege of moderating an insightful panel with Jonathan Lemmond, Jennifer Chalos, LEED AP, Sean Scollins, PMP, and Brian Geller LEED AP at CREtech on Debunking Retrofitting Myths for Smart, Decarbonized Buildings. Here are some key takeaways from the discussion: 🌍 The built environment accounts for 37% of global emissions. Half of the buildings that will exist in 2050 are already here, making retrofitting a critical strategy for reducing both operational and embodied carbon. 💡 Misconceptions slow progress: Many believe retrofits are too costly, complex, or disruptive. However, modern digital technologies prove otherwise. 🔋 Digital-first strategies work: Light interventions (metering, monitoring, active building management) can reduce operational carbon by 45% with ROI in under three years. 📈 Grid-interactive buildings are the future: By leveraging renewables, storage, and advanced controls, buildings can reduce energy demand, lower costs by 10–40%, and even generate revenue.
