It was great connecting with people on Day 1 at ConnectX WIA. Telecom Industry: The industry is experiencing a downturn. While products have evolved, only "critical business need" projects are moving forward. OEMs and Software License Service providers confirm flat growth, with new orders primarily for critical projects or those with clear ROI benefits for US carriers. Inbuilding Solutions: Open RAN from Ericsson remains complex from an inbuilding perspective, as echoed by AT&T leaders. Few OEMs see new revenue, with some projects moving and new players awaiting market traction and carrier approvals. Private Wireless: Neutral Host RAN is proposed over DAS, but its viability for 3PO current structure and outsourced maintenance in CU-DU-RU oRAN is unclear. Private Wireless is still in early proof-of-concept stages, while DAS Solutions continues to gain market share. ORAN/MOCN/Private Network CBRS strategies are yet being discussed among all stakeholders. Rural Broadband & FWA: This was a main focus in Georgia Ballroom, with interesting insights on satellite engineering initiatives. T-Mobile discussed new satellite launches under SpaceX. Rural America business models present a new revenue opportunity, with LEO potentially filling basic service gaps. Speaker and Panelist Energy: Many speakers and panelists exhibited low energy. AI and Emotional Value: AI lacks the ability to provide emotional value and empathy. Panelists did not have a clear answer on how AI can fulfill this need, though progress is being made without a defined timeline. An attendee noted, "Let's not push AI where it doesn't fit." Conference Quality: ConnectX WIA needs improvement: Many conferences were unprepared and lacked quality mic/speakers, leading to poor voice quality and echo, making it difficult to hear panelists across multiple rooms. Ericsson publishes a high-quality #MobilityReport twice a year. Once I have had the opportunity to participate in the creation of a #Virve2 article for the report (November 2022). Now the latest June 2024 report has been published and quoting from its editorial: "The Deployment of 5G is still ongoing, and is far from complete. We continue to see a robust uptake of 5G Subscriptions worldwide, anticipating the addition of nearly 600 million new 5G Subscriptions in 2024." Mobility Report available from the link. In Finland, 3G networks will be closed in the near future and commercial operators' investments will focus on 5G.
