Check out this new research led by Pennsylvania State University, published in Fire Ecology, where focus groups with fire managers across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland shed light on the barriers and opportunities for prescribed fire in the mid-Atlantic region. Interestingly, the study—supported by Guild staff—found that despite differing ecological and sociopolitical histories, there were few state-to-state differences. Fire managers consistently emphasized the need for landscape-level planning and relationship building. This reinforces the Guild's role as a connector across regions, a role that continues to be vital for effective land management nationwide. It's officially spring and we're ringing in the season with our first spring migration tracker featured observation! This observation is of a red-winged blackbird, spotted by iNaturalist user juliereid in Hamilton, ON. Among the cattails, red-winged blackbirds are a common sight and their distinctive “conk-la-dee” song announces that spring is here. At Ducks Unlimited Canada's Institute for Wetland and Waterfowl Research, we record bird and amphibian calls, such as the red-winged blackbird’s “conk-la-dee” song, at wetlands that have been restored by DUC. We’re comparing how many species use restored wetlands to the number of species using natural wetlands. Across Prairie Canada in the past two years, we have recorded over 230,000 minutes of audio and detected over 200 species of birds and 6 species of amphibians. I recently designed a detailed map of the American River Marine Estuary on Kangaroo Island, South Australia, through an ESRI tutorial in ArcGIS Pro. This project focused on map design and layout, showcasing the estuary's diverse ecosystems, including seagrass beds, sand areas, saline patches, and tidal classifications. The map highlights the protected Pelican Lagoon Sanctuary Zone, an important area for marine biodiversity. With careful visual organization and annotation, I aimed to create a map that effectively communicates the region's rich variety of habitats and conservation efforts. #GIS #MapMaking #SpatialAnalysis

Most owls that I have come to know live on trees but this one lives in burrows. They take advantage of the burrows excavated by a prairie dog or ground squirrel Native to the Americas, this small yet long-legged owl is found throughout open landscapes such as grasslands, rangelands, agricultural areas, deserts, etc. Unlike other owls, this bird is most active during the day but they avoid the midday sun. When threatened, this owl retreats to its burrow and produces a rattling and hissing sound, mimicking the rattlesnakes. This strategy is referred to as Acoustic Batesian Minicry. Though it is enlisted as a bird that is Least Concern, it is endangered in Canada and threatened in Mexico. It's officially spring and the remarkable spectacle of bird migration is happening all around us as migratory waterfowl and other bird species return north to breed. As more species begin to appear, we're excited to share another DUC Migration Tracker featured observation with you. This pair of tree swallows was observed by iNaturalist user johndreynolds in Burnaby, BC. Tree swallows belong to a group of birds called aerial insectivores—this means they mostly eat insects while flying. Aerial insectivores have experienced some of the steepest declines in their populations of any group of birds in Canada. The good news? DUC-funded research, conducted by our partners at the University of Saskatchewan, suggests that conserving wetlands within agricultural landscapes is part of the conservation solution. Observations such as this play a vital role in gathering data that informs our conservation efforts.
