A new Wood Mackenzie study commissioned by the Asia Natural Gas & Energy Association warns that the U.S. moratorium on new liquefied natural gas (LNG) export approvals could slow Asia's shift from coal to cleaner energy. With the United States positioned to supply a third of global LNG by 2035, halting new projects could drive up prices and leave buyers scrambling for alternatives. #lng #naturalgas #export #asia #globaltrade

Massive LNG Expansion Expected Worldwide Despite Green Transition The global LNG market is experiencing a significant expansion, driven by the energy crisis and increased demand for natural gas as a transition fuel. This rapid expansion could lead to oversupply and lower gas prices in the future, raising concerns about the economic viability of new projects. While LNG is often touted as a cleaner alternative to coal, the environmental impact of increased gas production and consumption remains a significant concern. https://lnkd.in/ehNmJs7j

Canada’s LNG industry represents a strategic asset that can drive economic growth, create jobs, and contribute to a cleaner and more secure energy future. Two years ago, one in five units of energy consumed in the European Union came from Russian fossil fuels. Today, it is one in twenty! With the cuts in Russian pipeline deliveries of gas, LNG supplies have now become much more important for energy costs and energy security in the EU, even as it builds up a new clean energy economy. Similarly, to meet growing Asian demand, global LNG volumes are forecast to increase by 20-30% between now and 2030 and remain elevated through 2040. Canada needs to seize this opportunity to supply low carbon LNG to the world as it transitions to clean energy. LNG Canada Woodfibre LNG Cedar LNG Ksi Lisims LNG

We have launched a very important study undertaken by Wood Mackenzie. The study models energy demand, power generation and the implications for gas demand for nations across Asia through to 2050. Critically, it shows that if the current 'pause' on US LNG export approvals was to remain in place longer term, it would result in higher global LNG prices than emerging nations in Asia can afford - and that they would continue to fall back on using coal. If Asia's LNG demand was to decrease by 30 per cent as a result of rising prices, an estimated 95 million tonnes of additional coal would be used annually in Asia in 2035. With soaring demand for Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) in Asia and Europe and America declaring a pause on approving new LNG export licences, now could be the time for Canada to evolve into the LNG export powerhouse the world needs. The world needs more Canadian Energy, and we're optimistic about the industry's future. This BNN Bloomberg article explains further: https://lnkd.in/gmqB4N2T #CanadianEnergy #LNG

Australia Looks to Couple Natural Gas Development With Net-Zero Goals https://ift.tt/LqH0EUN Australia’s government has included initiatives for substantial natural gas development with the launch of its Future Gas Strategy plan intended to help the country transition to cleaner energy by 2050. The latest plan assures global energy partners and foreign investors that the Australian government is a committed, reliable supplier of liquified natural gas. “It is clear we will need continued exploration, investment and development in the sector to support the path to net zero for Australia and for our export partners, and to avoid a shortfall in gas supplies,” said Resources Minister Madeline King. [Inside the Political Firestorm: NGI sits down with Neil Chatterjee, a former FERC chairman and commissioner, to discuss the impacts of President Biden’s LNG pause on authorizing new liquefied natural gas export projects in the U.S. Tune into NGI’s Hub & Flow podcast now.] King told news media that the country could not rely on “past investments to get us through the next decade, as existing fields deplete.” The 60-plus page document includes plans for increasing investment in domestic natural gas production to avoid both domestic and export supply gaps. It also includes detailed forecasts of LNG demand from Australia out to 2035. Australia is currently the third largest LNG exporter in the world after the United States and Qatar. Future gas projects will rely on carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) to help meet Australia’s net-zero targets, although the government has yet to publish its full decarbonization plan. The Australian Energy Producers (AEP) supported the new plan. However, AEP CEO Samantha McCulloch said significant investments are needed to avoid future market shortfalls. Australia’s LNG export demand to Asia is forecast to grow significantly by 2050, according to the AEP. It would be short-sighted, McCulloch said, “and at odds with Australia’s commitment to global emissions reductions if we were to stifle LNG exports and miss out on the significant economic opportunity on our doorstep.” Natural gas exploration in Australia has fallen over the last decade. In response, the government has introduced controversial short-term measures, including the Australian Domestic Gas Security Mechanism, which orders the diversion of feed gas intended for export to meet local gas supply shortfalls. For April, Australia exported 6.70 million metric tons (mmt) of the super-chilled fuel, according to EnergyQuest. In March, producers shipped 7.24 mmt, slightly more than the 7.06 mmt shipped in February. Environmentalists opposed plans to increase drilling for gas, saying it will delay Australia’s net-zero goals. Woodside Energy Group Ltd and Santos Ltd. are currently facing environmental opposition to oil and gas projects off the coast of northwestern Australia. “Placing a long-term commitment to this… climate-polluting fue...

A new study undertaken by Berkeley Research Group and commissioned by LNG Allies shows that lifecycle emissions from US LNG being used in Asia are far lower than for coal and pipeline gas. The study, developed over four years, tracks lifecycle emissions from US LNG from upstream production, through liquefication, shipping and then use in power generation in China, India, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. It found that US LNG greenhouse gas emissions are 53 per cent lower than coal and on average 63 per cent lower than pipeline gas from Turkmenistan and Russia. The research is another demonstration of why approvals for US LNG exports must be resumed quickly. ------------------------------------------------------ 💡 We are the voice of the gas industry in Asia 📖 Follow us for insights, data and policy on the pathway to a reliable, low-carbon energy future #lng #naturalgas #energytransition #energysecurity #decarbonisation #decarbonization

The International Energy Agency (IEA) must be wondering what in the world is going on with American liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports. In a recent agency report, "Global Gas Security Review 2024," finds that global demand for natural gas is rapidly increasing, exceeding the average growth rate between 2010 and 2020 and demand likely will reach all-time highs this year and next. Yet, IEA says natural gas supply that would meet that demand is "fragile" because there has been limited LNG production growth. #iea #lng #demandandsupply #globalgas #trade #naturalgas #exports

In Canada, environmental activists continue to belittle the contribution of LNG to decarbonizing the global power sector. This reflects, in part, their myopic preoccupation with Canadian GHG emissions (which will account for perhaps 1% of the world total by 2030), rather than with the path of global emissions. Now along comes this analysis from Rystad Energy, one of the most respected energy consultancies that often advocates for policies to accelerate the clean energy transition. It argues and documents that total "value-chain emissions of liquified natural gas (LNG) are lower on average than for coal-powered power generation, even when the fuel is shipped over long distances..." Moreover, it estimates that US-produced LNG "could emit up to 50% less than even the cleanest coal power plants." All of this leads the Rystad Energy analysts to conclude LNG shipped to Asia from the US, for use in the electricity sector, will lead to lower world-wide emissions. Canadian policymakers should pay heed.
