#Competition can be healthy for an industry as it can act as a powerful driver of innovation and creativity. This may hold true for the #media, #PR and #creative industries in Malaysia, where agencies are motivated to outdo each other, push boundaries and come up with creative solutions to brand problems. According to Andrew Lee, CEO of 4As Malaysia, the creative industry in Malaysia is an "interesting mix of competition and camaraderie" where everyone competes fiercely but has mutual respect that underpin these interactions. That said, A+M spoke to media, PR and creative heads in Malaysia, including Christyna Fong, Ashvin Anamalai, syahriza badron and Nizwani Shahar, about how they perceive competition in Malaysia, their experiences in the thriving industry and how competition and #collaboration can mutually support each other. #HealthyCompetition

Eileen, Ooi Wei Ling, CEO, Omnicom Media Group Malaysia told MARKETING-INTERACTIVE that healthy competition is much needed in every industry as it pushes companies to continue elevating themselves. Creating a fun and viral campaign in Singapore often involves navigating numerous levels of approval from upper management. Fortunately, the final product managed to pass all management censorship. Our typical feedback includes: "We want it family-safe!" "We want it to generate a positive image!" "We want the younger generation to like it!" "We want views!" As a creative professional, I can attest that balancing these demands while maintaining creativity can be challenging. However, the rewarding outcome is always worth the effort. Being a creative in Singapore requires resilience, but the results speak for themselves. #CreativeChallenges #MarketingInSingapore #ViralCampaigns

#Pitching is undoubtedly a demanding process and discovering that you haven't secured the pitch can be quite discouraging. Some companies sit down with #agencies to offer insights and reasons behind their decision and why they were unsuccessful, but there have been instances where agencies are left in the dark for months, wondering what ever went wrong. According to Andrew Lee, president of the Association of Accredited Advertising Agents 4As Malaysia (#4As), certain pitching etiquettes have becoming increasingly noticeable in Malaysia. One such issue is the disparity between the deadlines for pitch submissions and the decision-making period. That said, MARKETING-INTERACTIVE spoke to industry heads in Malaysia, including Prof. Mohd Said Bani C.M. Din, #VanithaSelvathurai, Peter De Kretser, Andy See, Syed Mohammed Idid, and Jonathan Tan, about some of the horrible practices they have seen in the pitching process and how clients can do better to improve the industry. #BadPitching

What is one pitch etiquette you live by? My personal etiquette is rooted in the philosophy of "Be so good they can't ignore you." I focus on building a strong reputation through excellent work and client relationships, which often leads to clients seeking us out rather than constantly pitching. Additionally, I live by the motto "I don't pitch, and I don't b****." This means approaching pitches with confidence in our work and maintaining professionalism even when we don't win. Bad-mouthing clients or competitors after an unsuccessful pitch is never acceptable – you never know when that client might return or when your paths might cross again. Appreciate A'bidah Zaid Shirbeeni reaching out to me and thank you MARKETING-INTERACTIVE for always having my PoV to be shared. Hopefully those running a PR Consultancy will be able to overcome such situations gracefully. Great sharing by Prof. Mohd Said Bani C.M. Din PRCAM President, who I am sure echos the views of Datuk P Kamalanathan P Panchanathan (APR, FIPR, MAPRCA)Founder & Chairman of the PRactitioners. But if all Communications PRactitioners are united, this would be a thing of the past, so c'mon Public Relations PRactitioners Society of Malaysia Public Relations and Communications Association of Malaysia (PRCA Malaysia) Institute of PR Malaysia IPRS (Institute of Public Relations of Singapore) PRCA APAC lets collaborate for the greater good of our industry.
