It's a common misconception that grant funding is available only to non-profits. The reality is that grants are given to for-profit companies all the time. It's true that more grants are available only to nonprofits, Tribal groups, and government entities, but whether a grant is available to your business typically comes down to three things: 1. Impact. What problem are you solving? If your organization has an outsized social benefit, if it brings business to an area desperate for jobs, if it positively affects the environment, or if what you're producing is innovative, there's a much higher chance that grant funding is available to support what you're doing. 2. Industry. Some large associations make grants available to further their industry's goals. Likewise, companies will sometimes hire lobbyists to encourage officials to make grants available for specific initiatives. 3. Knowledge. Research is widely supported through many Federal, State, and private foundations, whether you're a for- or non-profit entity. If your discoveries have the potential for widespread impact, there's likely someone out there who's looking to fund the research. #business #grants #smallbusiness #startups

With the increasing competition for funds from trusts and foundations, a fragile financial landscape at the local level, and shifts in individual and corporate giving, the strategy for securing resources is fraught with complexity. Neil Heslop, CEO of Charity Aid Foundation, remarks in the 2023 UK Giving Report that despite a record £12.7bn in donations last year, these were largely from the same number of donors. Amid economic instability and high inflation, organizations must rethink their approaches to fundraising. Curious what people think about non-profit funding models. For those who have worked in the space, or who have worked closely with non-profits, you know how much time is spent on fundraising - pulling time and attention away from programming. And, so little of what's raised goes to the actual people executing the work, leading to burnout and losing passionate and dedicated people. When I speak to people in the for-profit world, those who don't know the non-profit space, they are blown away by the 90:10 split - that's 90% to programming and 10% to operational costs. How do you innovate, expand, or stay modern when so tightly constrained? We're trying out something new at Purpose For Profit, I'd love feedback on our model from friends and colleagues who have been dedicated to non-profits and philanthropy. I'd also love to learn what you've seen work, new models that you're excited about, and changes that you think are needed.

𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘿𝙤𝙩𝙨: 𝙇𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙈𝙮 𝙋𝙖𝙨𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝘽𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙙 𝙋𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙪𝙡 𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥𝙨 𝙏𝙤𝙙𝙖𝙮 In my consulting work, I bridge the gap between for-profit companies and non-profit organizations, creating partnerships that not only benefit both sides but also maximize impact. Here’s how I do it: 𝗙𝗼𝗿-𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗡𝗼𝗻-𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 I help for-profits tap into the vast opportunities within the non-profit sector by connecting them with organizations that have the funding and access to grants aligned with their services. Whether it’s a non-profit looking for vendors or a for-profit seeking to provide critical services, I’m the relationship builder who connects the dots. 𝙂𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙀𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙨𝙚 Having written, allocated, and spent grants myself, I know exactly what’s needed to create, fund, and fulfill them. I guide non-profits and for-profits alike in crafting grant proposals that secure funding to deliver services that make a difference. "When unmet needs arise in a community, there's a high chance that somewhere else in the country, an existing nonprofit is successfully tackling that very challenge." Establishing an organization requires a significant investment of time, energy, funding, and manpower. It's essential to scale effective nonprofits rather than starting new organizations. I’ve enjoyed thoroughly in being involved in or reading reports of baseline studies done by the international non-governmental organisations that I have worked for. Surveying the community and piloting programs before launching them officially had helped the team address social issues more effectively. I've just added NCVO's Civil Society Almanac 2024 to my ever-growing collated list of philanthropy, benchmarking and broader charity sectoral reports. It's a comprehensive look principally at 2021/22 - and here are some of the headline stats: * The voluntary sector’s recovery continues, with growth in key areas: in 2021/22, there were approximately 166,000 voluntary organisations in the UK * Social services remains the dominant subsector * The sector's total income increased by 9% compared to the previous year, reaching £69.1bn. Expenditure rose by 2% to £65.4bn * Around 14.2 million people (27% of the population) volunteered formally The Almanac's 2024 workforce figures reveal that the voluntary sector employed 978,000 people (about 1 in 3 of them in London and the South East), which is about 3% of the UK workforce - a slight decline from 2023, although since 2011 the sector's workforce has grown by 30%. Women make up 68% of the workforce, 28% are over the age of 55, and while the proportion of disabled employees has increased, the sector lags behind in terms of ethnic diversity.
