Hard facts: a) Each person in the EU discards around 12 kg of clothing per year. b) Only 1% of the material discarded is re-used. c) The fashion industry causes 10% of global carbon emissions – more than international flights and maritime shipping combined (!!!) In response to this shocking scenario, the EU proposes a strategy for sustainable and circular textiles, with the following 2030 vision: ♻️ all textile products placed on the EU market are durable, repairable and recyclable, to a great extent made of recycled fibres, free of hazardous substances, produced in respect of social rights and the environment 💭”fast fashion is out of fashion” and consumers benefit longer from high quality affordable textiles 🔗profitable re-use and repair services are widely available 🌈the textiles sector is competitive, resilient and innovative with producers taking responsibility for their products along the value chain with sufficient capacities for recycling and minimal incineration and landfilling Read more: https://lnkd.in/gbBiXK7x #circulareconomy #greendeal #fashionindustry #sdg12 #epr #extendedproducerresponsibility #wastedirective #sustainability #sustainablebusiness #businessmodel

Textile production and consumption have major impacts on the environment and climate change, the industry is not sufficiently sustainable. We need continuous research, and intelligent science-based policy making, to create a #circulareconomy in textiles. You can read below about the activities of some of the multinational research projects funded by the European Research Executive Agency (REA) to support this goal, the results pack is interesting and easy to read. Thanks to my colleagues who worked on this
In the EU, we use nearly 26kg of textiles per person per year. We also discard about 11kg of them. 87% of these used clothes go to incinerators or landfill - accounting for up to 10% of our carbon footprint. Our fashion choices are contributing to the #ClimateCrisis. That is why the EU is funding research and innovation projects to further develop technologies and processes for #textile recycling. The my-fi project is highlighted by the European Research Executive Agency (REA) for its innovative work contributing to the reduction of our carbon footprint. 🍄🍄 🌍 In the EU, we each use about 26kg of textiles yearly, but sadly, 11kg ends up discarded, contributing to 10% of our carbon footprint. Our efforts are driving innovation in textile recycling towards a #CircularEconomy. Do you know what happens to your clothes when they are used and discarded? According to the European Commission, researchers estimate that less than 20% of used and waste textiles from households and industries are collected in the EU. And out of the waste effectively collected, only 30% is sent for recycling! It’s urgent to change the context and have the fabric of our textile industry on board! Here’s how we’re taking action and reduce textile waste: 🌍 Restricting the export of textile waste ♻ Setting standards for textiles to last longer 🚨 Combatting misleading sustainability claims 👗 Raising awareness about sustainable fashion 🚫 Discouraging the destruction of unsold textiles 🧶 Tackling greenwashing to empower consumers 💡 Requiring to provide transparent product details 🔄 Reversing overproduction and overconsumption 🧵 Setting requirements for minimum recycled content 🧬 Addressing the release of microplastics from synthetic fabrics 🔧 Supporting circular business models, like reuse and repair sectors Join us and build a more sustainable future for fashion! 🌍 Two Truths and a Lie? Unfortunately, All Are True. The textile industry faces alarming realities: 01. 0.3% circularity 02. 99% reliance on virgin materials 03. One-third of clothing goes unsold Two-thirds of textile waste ends up in landfills or incinerators These findings from the Circularity Gap Report Textiles by Circle Economy and the H&M Foundation reveal the urgent need for change. At Recover™, we’re proud to contribute by showcasing the environmental benefits of our recycled cotton fibers. Recycled materials can significantly reduce water use, electricity, and CO2 emissions—all while maintaining quality and style. Let’s close the loop on fashion. Fast Fashion Waste: What Happens Next? ⏭ With the EU’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for Textiles, the conversation around textile waste is changing—and so must the solutions. 🌎 Here’s the challenge: textile companies must now take responsibility for their products from production to disposal. But what does this mean for all the clothing we’ve accumulated over the years? Let’s think ahead: 🔄 Scenario 1: What if we adopted a deposit system for clothing and textiles, like the one used for bottles? Would consumers be willing to return garments for recycling? 🗑Scenario 2: Can we create better collection systems to keep textiles out of landfills and in the circular economy? 🛠 Scenario 3: Should producers be incentivized—or penalized—based on how easily their clothing can be reused or recycled? At Re-Fresh, we’re all about finding solutions to tackle textile waste. But we want to hear from you. What’s the best way forward? Would you pay a deposit? Do we need smarter systems or stricter rules? #CircularEconomy #EPRforTextiles #SustainableFashion Viktoria Kanar, Revital Nadiv, Gal Taylor, Eva Kohne, Aleksandar Kovačević, Andrea Munoz

Textile sustainability in the European Union (EU) focuses on reducing the environmental impact of textile production and consumption. The EU promotes initiatives to enhance the sustainability of the textile industry by encouraging circularity, reducing waste, and promoting the use of eco-friendly materials. Key areas include reducing water and energy usage, minimizing harmful chemical use, and encouraging recycling and upcycling of textiles. Policies such as the European Green Deal aim to transition towards a circular economy, where textiles are reused and repurposed to reduce the strain on natural resources and decrease textile waste. The EU also supports transparency in supply chains, advocating for ethical labor practices and sustainable production methods. #Textile #GarmentsSourcing #Apparel #Sustaiability #EnvironmentalProtection #TrendyTextileWelt

Fast fashion and synthetic materials like polyester contribute 10% to global emissions and textile waste — but change is possible. By shifting towards a circular fashion economy, we can extend the lifespan of materials, reduce waste, and lower pollution. Facilities like PropetSA - Polyester Fibre in Cape Town are leading the way by recycling used PET bottles into polyester fibres for fashion, automotive, and building industries, reducing our reliance on virgin materials. Together, let’s make sustainable choices and be part of the solution. Click here to learn more: https://lnkd.in/dYcZj8ZK
