In the EU, we use nearly 26kg of textiles per person per year. We also discard about 11kg of them. 87% of these used clothes go to incinerators or landfill - accounting for up to 10% of our carbon footprint. Textile production and consumption have major impacts on the environment and climate change, the industry is not sufficiently sustainable. We need continuous research, and intelligent science-based policy making, to create a #circulareconomy in textiles. You can read below about the activities of some of the multinational research projects funded by the European Research Executive Agency (REA) to support this goal, the results pack is interesting and easy to read. Hard facts: a) Each person in the EU discards around 12 kg of clothing per year. b) Only 1% of the material discarded is re-used. c) The fashion industry causes 10% of global carbon emissions – more than international flights and maritime shipping combined (!!!) That's a truckload of waste ending up in a landfill every second. 🗑️🚛 3. Clothing and textiles make up at least 7% of the total waste in global landfill space. 🌍💔 4. 100 billion new clothing garments are produced globally every year. 🏭👗 5. Only 1% of clothes get recycled into new garments. 😢♻️ 6. Textile production causes 42 million tons of plastic waste per year. 🧵🌊 7. Every time a synthetic garment is washed, it releases tiny plastic microfibers into the water.
