Function Health, an Austin, Texas-based health technology company, has closed its Series A funding round, bringing its total funding to $53 million. The round was led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) Bio + Health, with support from the a16z Cultural Leadership Fund and a diverse group of investors, including venture capital firms and high-profile individuals from the entertainment, sports, and technology sectors. The company offers a comprehensive health platform that provides over 100 lab tests. This allows users to monitor various aspects of their health, from heart and hormones to thyroid, nutrients, toxins, autoimmunity, and immunity. Function presents results in an easily understandable dashboard with clinician summaries and securely stores data to track health trends over time. Function plans to use the new funding to scale its technology and increase access to whole-body testing, aiming to empower more individuals to take control of their health. "The pandemic experience was supposed to be a boon for direct-to-consumer disease treatments, digital therapeutics and decentralized care. But adoption turned out to be much slower than expected, and massive failures such as Pear Therapeutics sent investors scrambling for the exits. The big picture: The outlook could be improving for a few digital health companies — especially those offering novel uses of artificial intelligence." At the end of the day, it all comes down to adoption. My dad tells a story. A company launched a new cat food that would address a nutritional deficiency in existing cat foods on the market.  Everybody loved the cat food – sales, marketing, everybody in the C-Suite, and the board of directors. The salespeople had no problem getting shelf space for the cat food and competitors announced their intention to launch competing products. Cat owners eagerly snapped up the cat food. However, there was one small problem. The cats would not eat the cat food. In healthcare so many promising ideas seem to die because the healthcare professionals will not adopt them. Increasing the likelihood of adoption is a critical part of each startup's business plan.
