Mitigating climate risk requires public and private organizations to join forces. Without partnerships like the one between the Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik - IPP and Proxima Fusion and their synergies from world-leading fusion research and state-of-the-art development work, the road to the first fusion power plant would be much rockier. The findings from the W7-X experiment are the basis that enables us to ultimately lead #FusionEnergy generated by QI stellarators to industrial maturity. It is good to see that politicians of the European Union and the Free State of Bavaria have also recognized the potential of new energy technologies and are paving the way for fusion with proportionate regulation, among other things. Whatever we do to mitigate climate risks, it is a matter of time and scale. Bavarian Prime Minister Dr. Markus Söder highlighted the ambition of his government’s “Fusion Masterplan” to see the first fusion power plant built in Bavaria, where so much of the history of magnetic confinement fusion has been made. Here are top takeaways from the event: 🇪🇺 Europe is well-positioned to be a global leader in developing economically viable fusion power plants. 🎛️ Ambitious projects like W7-X and ITER have led to the establishment of a robust industrial base and an extensive supply chain. 🇩🇪 Germany’s and Bavaria’s leading role in the global fusion ecosystem continues to evolve, from stellarator research to development and engineering. However, GRID stabilisation costs are rising fast EnergieWende has resulted in expensive electricity, driving out energy-intensive industries like Chemicals (BASF) and Steel production (ThyssenKrupp). With reliable Nuclear the electricity price would have been much lower!

A joy to be in the world’s happiest country this week, and the one that drinks most coffee per-head (are the 2 related?) – aka #Finland. 🇫🇮 In fact there were multiple joys as I championed UK-Finland trade (£6.4bn/yr) and investment (£10bn) in 👇 ⚡️Nuclear energy: ✅ addressing the Nordic Nuclear Forum Conference on UK’s ambitious plans to quadruple our nuclear generating capacity by 2050 for sustainability, security and prosperity reasons, and the opportunities for collaboration with Finland and other European partners on this. ✅ engaging with Rolls-Royce SMR on their exciting plans for #SmallModularReactors in Europe, which UK government strongly supports. 🔒Defence & security: Insightful discussions with BAE Systems about their extensive offerings in land, sea, air, space and digital security and defence, and how best to encourage further European exports for our security and prosperity. 🤖 Tech: brain-stretching discussion with IQM Quantum Computers on quantum capabilities and opportunities for investment in UK as a major world player in this field. 🌍 Sustainability – in fish & concrete: ✅ exploring potential multi-million UK fish gigafactory investment from Finnforel providing ecologically friendly & healthy fish-farming. ✅ encouraging UK investment by cutting-edge 3D printing company Hyperion Robotics focusing on concrete industrial structures with greatly enhanced design and production sustainability 📈 Investor dinner – with Finnish businesses in tech (Bittium Wireless, Measurlabs, Tramigo, sustainable solutions (ReHeat), premium retail brands (Fiskars Group) plus British companies BAE systems and Rolls Royce SMR. 🤝 Team – great to spend time discussing plans and approaches with my excellent DBT colleagues in #Helsinki, expertly led by Country Director, Johanna Savolainen and British Ambassador to Finland, Theresa Bubbear OBE. Germany has been referenced many times as a cautionary tale of magical thinking in energy policy, with feel-good pronouncements that lack practical substance. The article below details the direct results of this wishful thinking - high electricity/energy prices as the leading factor in de-industrialization and economic woes. Neighboring countries, which noticed the trend of Germany relieving itself of reliable baseload sources of power while also compromising its energy security with large volumes of Russian NG, have decided to build up their nuclear capacity (Czechia, Poland, Hungary, France, Slovakia, Netherlands, Sweden) and are capturing Germany's leaking industrial base. The solution remains based in energy fundamentals of long-term cost-effective, reliable, secure, and sustainable energy. It will be interesting as with Germany you single one need for one country, and it is not the solution, it shows how blind the fission industry is. There is a fission fuel shortage coming and becoming real as the fission industry trebles the industry and it does not want the advances of renewables, hydrogen grid variable generation and batteries as a system solution of energy generation for the whole of the world it only wants to help 39 countries out of 189 just the rich nor cares about the waste that is dangerous for 1000 of years, what a waste of time you are here. Fission is an interim unlike fusion and renewables, with the help of the grid-attached variable hydrogen generators and batteries, Fusion is the new future energy is helping push new technologies, and new businesses and create new and more jobs worldwide if Germany does not move and adopt renewables, hydrogen grid variable generation and batteries plus fusion as a total energy system for its future advancement and growth it will languish in the dark in 80 years. Power Plant Strategy for Germany, first steps made: The German Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action ("BMWK") announced today that the Chancellor, the Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Action and the Minister of Finance agreed on a power plant strategy for Germany. Details are to be developed, discussions with the EU Commission are are outstanding. But, the buzzwords in the press release show a - highly needed - spirit of optimism. Some extracts of the press release (translation, original press release of the BMWK in German): - "... The power plant strategy creates the framework for investments in modern, highly flexible and climate-friendly power plants that are capable of using hydrogen in the future.... - ... In order to quickly realize a no regret quantity of power plants, the power plant strategy will immediately stimulate an early expansion of power plants.... - ... To support the development of new technologies (e.g. nuclear fusion) ... these will be promoted with suitable instruments. Power plants that run exclusively on hydrogen are funded up to 500 MW as part of energy research. CO₂ capture and storage for electricity generation plants using gaseous energy sources will be addressed as part of the carbon management strategy.... - ... existing obstacles to the construction and operation of electrolysers should be removed without restriction and that all opportunities should be used to accelerate the expansion of electrolysers in particular, which should be operated in a system-supporting manner. - no double charging of levies and fees on electricity for storage and electrolysis, - ... planning and approval procedures for the power plants included in the power plant strategy will be substantially accelerated...."
