How are you addressing equity in your work as designers? How about COOs and developers, what's your approach?

Last Thursday I had the opportunity to attend Bisnow's Chicago Construction and Development Conference! It was packed with insights, connections, and forward-thinking discussions. Here are some of the key takeaways: 🔍 Market Trends and Insights: We explored the people, projects, and places shaping Midwest C&D for 2024. Key topics included the most eye-catching asset classes, the critical role of site selection, and the neighborhoods developers are targeting for new projects. 🌆 Chicago's Influence: The evolution of the Chicago market and its impact on the broader real estate landscape was a hot topic. We discussed how other cities can learn from Chicago and vice versa, especially in navigating economic challenges like high interest rates. 💡 Collaboration and Innovation: The sessions highlighted strategies for navigating complex funding and regulatory environments. 🤝 Networking: One of the best parts was networking with a diverse group of industry leaders. Rise and Shine! Raleigh area Coffee with Leaders hosted by the Raleigh Chamber was such an incredible event yesterday morning. I was able to share more of my story and introduce ways to be inspired by nature in growing and analyzing the health of your business and ecosystem. Here were some of the takeaways that resonated with the more than 60 area leaders who joined: 1. Ecosystems and systems-thinking inspired by nature to fuel business health and growth. 2. #coexisting in a space where #holistic health + living boldly can coexist structurally. 3. For those structural engineers in the audience - a correlation of keystone species in an ecosystem with the keystone in a structural arch to all business leaders identifying the keystones in your business! 4. Be a beaver. Strategically working to impact and engineer their ecosystem! 5. Driving Population Health as a community priority is possible on all projects, thanks to a tool @Perkins&Will launched entitled Precede. 6. Design your career - intentionality plus setting goals 7. Invest in an annual solo ‘MEtreat’ to focus on goal setting towards your Life’s Work! 8. Celebrate Milestones There was the buzz that carried folks into their day with a charge to ‘BEE the Change!’ Let’s keep focused on bringing more life and vitality to our community. This MREJ Summit focuses on the present challenges and OPPORTUNITIES we face in transforming our downtowns into neighborhoods where live, work, play and stay all collide in a way that drives better outcomes for all stakeholders. It is happening today despite challenging economic conditions in real estate, but can be accelerated through leverage and partnership. Private, federal, state and local resources are all more closely aligning in this post pandemic effort and through partnerships and enhanced financing solutions we can bring our downtowns forward to better serve people today and our next generation. With new housing production slowing significantly the last 24 months and the way we use existing buildings often shifting significantly the time is NOW for this sustainable focused, tax base stabilizing/generating, job driving, and adaptive reuse(housing focused) effort. Attending conferences is a great way to expand your network as an engineer and further your career; curious about what takes place on the inside? In November 2023, Elizabeth Dier, Yash Mehta and Zhuoran Zhao, three students from the #MasterofEngineeringLeadership in #UrbanSystems travelled to Toronto to attend the annual conference of the The Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships, a high-profile event bringing together national and international leaders and experts in the field. One of the highlights for the students was participating in a fireside chat. Each student was paired with an industry leader to discuss three thought-provoking questions about significant issues in private-public partnerships (P3). Elizabeth was matched with Melissa Di Marco, a Partner at Accuracy Canada and Zhuoran, with Gary Quenneville from Green Infrastructure Partners. “Gary was interested in the MEL in Urban Systems program and its combination of technical components and leadership,” says Zhuoran. “We talked about the importance of leadership to ensure collaborative decision making.” Elizabeth made some connections at the conference with her counterparts in health care in Ontario, and she has since hired a consulting firm she met at the event to do a project for Vancouver Coastal Health, where she is the Director of Real Estate. “Progressive P3 was a term much in use, indicating the industry’s desire to rebuild partnerships through greater levels of collaboration," says Zhouran. Those people that you meet and talk to then become resources for you in the future of your firm. We are all here in this community and are accessible and want to help each other. This is not just about immediate improvements in your business, but lifelong sustained connections and growth. But if you wait to register, and it sells out and you end up kicking yourself for not taking action sooner then you have no one to blame but yourself. Stop what you are doing right now and go register. It will be the best decision you make this year.
