ICYMI: Coastal Carolina University was awarded a $640,000 grant from the South Carolina Research Authority to build a research commercialization and technology transfer capacity. Three faculty members at Sanford Burnham Prebys are among the most influential scientists worldwide in the 2024 rankings by the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate.  Clarivate publishes the Highly Cited Researchers list each year to recognize individuals demonstrating significant and broad scientific influence.  David A. Brenner, MD, president and CEO of the institute, was recognized for contributions in the cross-field category, which focuses on researchers who have advanced multiple research areas. Randal J. Kaufman, PhD, director of the Degenerative Diseases Program, also was cited for contributions in the cross-field category. Tariq Rana, PhD, an educational affiliate professor in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, was noted for contributions in the cross-field category. More: https://bit.ly/3OK0sRS

This week, nearly 60 invited scientists gathered for the FASEB Science Policy Symposium, themed "Ensuring a Sustainable Biomedical Workforce: Challenges and Opportunities." NIH's Michael Lauer, MD, highlighted trends in PhD training, noting, "We have more people getting PhDs, more postdocs, but the number of faculty positions has gone down.” Participants explored how FASEB can help shape policies for a supportive, sustainable research ecosystem. #PhDTraining #SciencePolicy

Big news from the TCU research community! Supported by grants from The National Institutes of Health, Welch Foundation, ACS PRF and the TCU-routed Flatley Foundation, this highly collaborative project highlights the power of teamwork in science. Four chemistry and biology undergraduate co-authors, graduate students, a post-doc and a TCU medical student worked together to tackle an important challenge in Alzheimer’s research. Their findings demonstrate a method to decorate molecules to cross the blood-brain barrier—key for Alzheimer’s drug development. These molecules activate intracellular mechanisms that protect cells from oxidative stress, a driver of neurodegenerative diseases. This work is a testament to the incredible opportunities at TCU for innovative, cross-disciplinary research. Check out the paper here! #TCU_CSE
