Big news from the TCU research community! Supported by grants from The National Institutes of Health, Welch Foundation, ACS PRF and the TCU-routed Flatley Foundation, this highly collaborative project highlights the power of teamwork in science. Four chemistry and biology undergraduate co-authors, graduate students, a post-doc and a TCU medical student worked together to tackle an important challenge in Alzheimer’s research. Their findings demonstrate a method to decorate molecules to cross the blood-brain barrier—key for Alzheimer’s drug development. These molecules activate intracellular mechanisms that protect cells from oxidative stress, a driver of neurodegenerative diseases. This work is a testament to the incredible opportunities at TCU for innovative, cross-disciplinary research. Check out the paper here! #TCU_CSE

👨🎓 The fascination of the lab - students give positive feedback after elective course Laboratory work seems like the most natural thing in the world when you have been working in research for years. The feedback from our young students after completing the elective course "Vascular Disease and Therpay" gives us the chance to experience the fascination of our working environment once again. "It's impressive how quickly the processes of real-time cell monitoring with IncuCyte and monocyte staining work," said one participant after the event. These are processes we take for granted in our daily work. If we look at them again through the eyes of our students, we too are grateful again for these scientific achievements. To make it easier for the newcomers to get to grips with the complex processes, Ingrid Fleming, Dr. Mauro Siragusa and Dr. Guillermo Luxán drew on the students' previous knowledge. "It was great for me to see how much knowledge I had actually retained from our biochemistry courses and was able to reproduce," reported one student after the event. At the same time, new and advanced content was also taught. "I was able to expand my molecular understanding of an inflammatory process and its messenger substances through the intensive visualization," another course participant was pleased to report. Of course, great importance was also attached to each individual being able to gain their own experience, as this is the only way to really grasp the content. This was also emphasized by one student: "I really enjoyed the lab introduction, the appreciative atmosphere of the group leaders and the encouragement to try things out for myself and I would wish the same for future students." We would like to take this opportunity to thank our students for their #positivefeedback. We are already looking forward to the next semester. #scienceeducation #sciencecommunity #laboratorylife #studymedicine

On the 4th of July, I successfully defended my thesis, titled: “Falls in older adults: prediction, the role of medication and the use of decision support”. I had a wonderful day and I could not have wished for a better conclusion to my PhD trajectory. Among other things, my thesis describes the development and validation of a set of prediction models that can be used to estimate the risk of falling among older patients. One of my models was implemented in a clinical decision support system that helps doctors withdraw medications. This decision support system is currently being evaluated in a large clinical trial, the design of which is described in my thesis. My thesis can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eiBEx7Vc Many thanks to my supervisors Natasja Van Schoor, Nathalie van der Velde, Ameen Abu-Hanna, Martijn Heymans and Stephanie "Ace" Medlock as well as to my opponents. I would also like to thank my paranymphs, Samira Lone and Liping (Libby) Wang.
