AFRC participated in the CPA Australia ESG Forum 2024 on 26 September , and an #AFRC representative spoke at the forum to discuss the regulatory developments influencing sustainability reporting practices both in Hong Kong and other parts of the world, emphasising the need for Hong Kong companies to enhance their sustainability reporting capabilities to maintain the region’s competitive edge as a green finance hub. The unique expertise of accounting professionals in navigating regulatory requirements, collecting and analysing data, and establishing internal controls is crucial. This positions them well to assist companies throughout their sustainability reporting journeys. The AFRC underscores the importance of external sustainability assurance in enhancing the credibility and reliability of sustainability reporting. ESG Insights: It has been incredible to witness ESG development over the years in Botswana from ideation to tangible products in the capital market. I share my insights on how Professional Accountants are well poised to lead the sustainability agenda following the adoption of sustainability standards IFRS S1 and IFRS S2 in January 2024 by the ISSB.

As ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) continues to shape the legal and business landscape, I had the opportunity to complete the IBA ESG Accelerator Training Programme, designed for legal practitioners across Africa. The program offered rich insights into key areas such as ESG disclosures and reporting, sustainable finance, governance, and climate change. One session that stood out to me focused on ESG litigation and dispute resolution trends, exploring global and African case studies on stakeholder expectations, corporate liability, greenwashing disputes, and climate change litigation. This training highlighted the growing importance of ESG in legal practice, and I look forward to building on this knowledge in the future.
