GLP-1s aren’t new – they’ve been around for decades to treat type 2 diabetes and have 30+ years of solid weight-loss research. Additionally, GLP-1s are just one of many tools in the obesity management toolbox - there's an entire spectrum of additional weight-loss medications, bariatric surgery, and lifestyle interventions with troves of research backing up their efficacy. The spotlight has been on the latest research, but there's a wealth of treatment knowledge that shouldn’t be overlooked just because the conversation has shifted. Curious about other obesity myths? What qualifies you for bariatric surgery? Bariatric surgery requirements begin with establishing a diagnosis of class III obesity. That means that you either: 1. Have a BMI of 40 or higher. The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a way of estimating how much body fat you have based on your height-to-weight ratio. A score of 40 or higher is associated with a high risk of related diseases. It usually equates to about 100 lbs. overweight. 2. Have a BMI of at least 35 and at least one related health problem. A BMI of 35 without a related health problem is considered class II obesity. NOTE While BMI is easily measured, you may have to take some medical tests to diagnose your obesity-related health conditions. #weightloss #weightlosssurgeries #Bariatrics #BMI

A nerve block is a medical procedure commonly used to relieve pain by temporarily interrupting the transmission of pain signals along specific nerves. During a nerve block, a local anesthetic or a combination of anesthetic and steroid medication is injected near the targeted nerve or nerve bundle. This blocks the nerve's ability to transmit pain signals to the brain, providing temporary pain relief in the affected area. Nerve blocks can be used to manage acute pain, such as during surgery or childbirth, or chronic pain conditions like neuropathy or arthritis. The duration of pain relief varies depending on the type of nerve block and the individual's response to the medication. Nerve blocks can be performed under ultrasound guidance or with the assistance of other imaging techniques to ensure accuracy and minimize potential risks. It is important to discuss the potential benefits, risks, and alternatives of a nerve block with a healthcare professional before undergoing the procedure.

One of the misconceptions that we witnessed during the recent #HLTH2024 conference was how many people were talking about GLP-1s as if they were new. GLP-1s have been around for a while – with a ton of research and insights that are very well established. Oddly, I heard many comments implying that obesity treatment in general is a relativity new area. Nothing could be further from the truth as we have decades of behavioral, pharmacological and surgical data. When considering all the options for obesity treatment, look for a curriculum that is grounded in proven science, not social media hype. Interested in what other GLP-1 misconceptions we see? https://lnkd.in/gR467TPe Article title: Case Study: Local Anesthetic Toxicity After Bier Block. Was intralipid Therapy the Correct Remedy Author(s): Dawood Nasir*; Babatunde Ogunnaike; Charles Whitten Journal: Open Journal of Pain Medicine Journal ISSN: 2640-8104 Abstract: Introduction: Intralipid therapy is recommended for patients with local anesthetics like bupivacaine, but it is not advisable for patients with short acting local anesthetic toxicity like lidocaine. Case Presentation: 42 years old healthy female was brought to operating room for release of carpal tunnel syndrome of left hand. It was decided to perform Bier block. After placement of successful Bier block, surgery was completed in twenty minutes and after tourniquet release, patient was noted to have some shaking movement. Local anesthetic toxicity was suspected due to the tourniquet being released too soon, before the recommended time of forty-five minutes. #PhysiologyOfPain #MechanismsOfPain #AcutePain #ChronicPain #TherapeuticOptions #PainControl #InterventionalProcedures #NonPharmacologicApproaches #PostoperativePain #OncologyPain #PainSyndromes #PalliativeCare #PediatricHealth #AgingHealth #Peertechz #PeertechzPublications #OpenAccess #ScientificJournals #PeerReviewedJournals #OpenAccessPublishers #Pharmacology #Addiction #Abuse #PainMedication #AdverseEvents #DrugSafety #PharmacoeconomicsResearch #QualityOfLife
