Bariatric surgery is a medical procedure that helps individuals with obesity achieve significant weight loss and improve related health conditions. The surgery involves modifying the stomach and intestines to limit food intake and nutrient absorption. Common types of bariatric surgery include gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and adjustable gastric banding. By reducing excess weight, bariatric surgery can improve conditions like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea. It's a life-changing solution for those who have struggled with obesity and related health issues. Metabolic adaptations in #energyexpenditure exist even following bariatric surgery. Why it matters: There may be a homeostatic response to weight loss stimulates weight regain in order to maintain or restore an individual's energetic setpoint. A study by Tam et al 2016 found metabolic adaptation in 24 hr energy expenditure and sleep of -190 to -230 kcal/day as early as 8 wks after surgery. Whether metabolic adaption is associated with #weightregain is still up for debate. #weightloss #obesity #obesitymedicine #energetics #metabolicadaptation https://lnkd.in/eBxSiCw9

Insights from Dr Ian Martin: A recent study shows that 43% of people believe diet and exercise are the most effective treatments for severe obesity. However, this belief is outdated. Newer treatments, like GLP-1 analogue injections and bariatric surgery, offer more proven results. While injections show efficacy over months, bariatric surgery provides long-lasting outcomes, often measured in decades. It's important to remember that obesity drugs aren’t curative - when stopped, the weight often returns. Bariatric surgery remains a key, durable option for sustainable weight management.

Is bariatric surgery still a safe and effective option in treating obesity? Our Wondr Health Chief Medical Officer, Tim Church, MD, MPH, PhD was interviewed by Yahoo to dive into misconceptions surrounding obesity and bariatric surgery. "While 2 in 5 adults in the U.S. have taken a GLP-1 drug like Ozempic or Mounjaro for the purpose of weight loss, bariatric surgery continues to be “underutilized,” experts say. The ASMBS reports that in 2022, there were nearly 280,000 bariatric procedures performed in the U.S., which means that only 1% of people eligible for the surgery actually had it. Dr. Tim Church, an obesity researcher and chief medical officer of Wondr Health, tells Yahoo Life that these findings may alleviate the apprehension that many people have toward bariatric surgery. “Surgery is underutilized by patients due to fears about cost, safety, permanency and stigma. These are important considerations to discuss with your doctor, but it's a proven, safe procedure and generally affordable,” says Church." 👉 https://lnkd.in/gYzKkrwM

A nerve block is a medical procedure commonly used to relieve pain by temporarily interrupting the transmission of pain signals along specific nerves. During a nerve block, a local anesthetic or a combination of anesthetic and steroid medication is injected near the targeted nerve or nerve bundle. This blocks the nerve's ability to transmit pain signals to the brain, providing temporary pain relief in the affected area. Nerve blocks can be used to manage acute pain, such as during surgery or childbirth, or chronic pain conditions like neuropathy or arthritis. The duration of pain relief varies depending on the type of nerve block and the individual's response to the medication. Nerve blocks can be performed under ultrasound guidance or with the assistance of other imaging techniques to ensure accuracy and minimize potential risks. It is important to discuss the potential benefits, risks, and alternatives of a nerve block with a healthcare professional before undergoing the procedure.
