Prevention and early intervention is like the sturdy fence at the top of a cliff. This is always better and cheaper in the long run than the ambulance at the bottom.
"We know what to do, we just haven't done it." HCA co-chair Professor Boyd Swinburn spoke to RNZ about the urgent need to focus on disease prevention following a report by ASMS which found a 22.5% increase in presentations to emergency departments in 9 years and more than one third of adult NZers are not getting the healthcare they need. "If anything, this government has been taking prevention backwards with the repeal of the Smokefree Environments Bill and also looking to chop the school lunches," HCA co-chair Professor Boyd Swinburn. https://lnkd.in/gPyrFs_z

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention plays a critical role in advancing public health initiatives and protecting people from all health threats, beyond just infectious diseases. Through preventative programs like reducing tobacco use, drowning & injury prevention, and food safety, the CDC has saved millions of lives and continues to be a vital force in public health in the United States and globally. In this recent STAT article, eight former CDC directors warn against cuts to public health funding for the CDC and what it would mean for Americans and many more. https://lnkd.in/ezgdGDZk

As of October 14, 2024, the Rwanda Ministry of Health has reported 62 confirmed cases, including 15 deaths, in the Marburg virus disease (MVD) outbreak; 26 confirmed cases have recovered. Most of the people infected are health workers, underscoring the importance of following the identify, isolate, and inform strategy in health care settings to prevent transmission. To date, there are no cases of MVD in the United States, and the risk to the general population in the United States is low. However, U.S. health care facilities should ensure that their protocols for managing viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHF) like MVD are up-to-date. NETEC has updated MVD resources to help you gauge your facility's readiness to manage MVD, including a new online Health Care Facility Viral Hemorrhagic Fever (VHF) Preparedness Checklist (also available as a downloadable tool). The checklist was developed to help health care facilities assess their readiness to identify, isolate, inform, and provide initial treatment for patients suspected or confirmed to have a VHF. Once you complete the checklist, you’ll receive a copy of your responses and links to resources to support your organization’s readiness. AS NATIONAL COVID INQUIRY WRAPS UP, EXPERTS CALL FOR ACTION ON CENTRE FOR DISEASE CONTROL, AND AIR QUALITY IN SCHOOLS Our joint statement calling for the Australian Government to fully-fund and establish a permanent Australian Centre for Disease Control has been acknowledged in an article by Croakey Health Media. The joint statement was published in partnership with Public Health Australia, Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases and the Climate and Health Alliance. READ NOW: https://lnkd.in/gBpBsdqc 'Leading health and medical organisations have urged the Federal Government to act swiftly in cementing the future of the Australian Centre for Disease Control (CDC), calling for funding to be announced by the end of the year and before the federal election is called' says Croakey Health Media. RACP President, Professor Jennifer Martin, said the CDC must also focus on chronic disease prevention. “The burden of preventable disease in our country is driven by modifiable factors such as tobacco use and vaping, unhealthy working and living environments, obesity and diabetes, underpinned by commercial determinants of health." Over 2 out of 10 patients we encounter in our outpatient departments are actually caregivers, who have gotten sick in the process of taking care of a loved one admitted in the hospital😤. And see where these people sleep and cook from, not a pleasant sight.😟 🏨This makes me reflect—have our hospital designs truly adapted to reflect our African way of life, where one patient means five caregivers? And no, we e can't ask caregivers to stay away, it's simply our way of showing love and care as Africans. What we need is to plan better, accommodating caregivers with proper living spaces, clean water, and shelter. We need to ensure our caregivers are protected from hospital acquired infections. Doing so can save our health systems billions, over time. It's time we start designing hospitals that work for our people and our culture. Let's adopt Africacentric designs. Infection prevention is the way.🪰 Share your experience as a bedsider in the comment section. All healthcare systems should be prepared to identify and be able to respond to someone with a presentation that includes these pathogens in their differential diagnosis. Globalization and increasing travel, the importation of high threat pathogens are a possibility and a significant threat if we are not prepared.

Long Covid project available to all Southwest VirginiansThe Central Virginia Health District began a Long COVID surveillance project in October of 2023 that is now available to all residents of Southwest Virginia. Long COVID is when a person is still sick two or more months after getting COVID-19. Symptoms can include trouble breathing, a cough, feeling weak and tired, and problems with certain organs, such as the heart, brain, or lungs. A diagnosis of Long COVID is not required to participate. We want to learn about any long-term effects that people might have two or more months after a COVID-19 infection. To participate in the study, you must meet the following criteria: Had COVID-19 at least once or been diagnosed with Long COVID Experienced symptoms lasting at least two months after a COVID infection Must be a resident of one of the following health districts: Roanoke City and Alleghany, Central Virginia, Cumberland Plateau, LENOWISCO, Mount Rogers, New River, Pittsylvania-Danville, Southside, or West Piedmont. If you qualify and would like to enroll, go to https://lnkd.in/et8jKxvB. A member from our team will make contact, review consent, and complete a phone interview. Individuals will then be asked to participate in follow up interviews in three and six months after the initial interview. Findings from the study will be submitted for future publication and presentation to the scientific community and made available at CVHD.org. The purpose of the study is to improve our understanding of how Long COVID affects the residents of rural Virginia, assess the quality of support participants have received, and identify Long COVID resource needs.
