The term sustainability is used to describe the ability to maintain or support processes, systems, or resources over time without depleting them or causing harm to future generations. This aims to balance:
📢 Environmental Responsibility, which focuses on conserving natural resources (like forests, water, and air) and reducing pollution to ensure a healthy planet for the future. Practices here include use of renewable energy-biogas, solar etc, waste reduction, and biodiversity conservation.
📢Economic Viability, which ensures that economic activities are designed to support long-term growth without exhausting resources or harming ecosystems. Focus is creating resilient businesses and economies that can adapt to challenges like climate change or resource scarcity.
📢Social Equity which aim at meeting human needs, such as access to clean water, education, and healthcare, while ensuring fair treatment and opportunities for all, including marginalized groups.
📢 Future-Oriented Thinking, which encourages planning and decision-making that considers long-term impacts rather than short-term gains, ensuring well-being for future generations.
In essence, sustainability connects environmental stewardship, economic resilience, and social equity, making it a cornerstone for addressing global challenges like climate change, poverty, and resource depletion.
With this post I have learnt the importance of sustainability terms, some of which I use quite often. Thanks to Neha Devapuja for compiling and sharing this. Let me add mine in my own words;
Sustainable living: refers to having a conscious individual daily practices such as water consumption, food intake, mode of commuting that ensures there is enough resources for the present and future generations. For example, because of my recent knowledge about urban wastewater treatment based on my masters thesis, I now use less water also dispose toilet paper in the bin instead of flushing it down the drain. This practise of mine makes water available for someone else, and reduces the solid waste in urban wastewater thereby reducing the time and energy required to recycle the wastewater (if only more of us becomes aware and imbibe little positive changes in our daily behaviour.
I am actively looking for a job and interested in topics related to #sustainability, #circulareconomy and #ESG. Feel free to follow or connected with me here Oluwakemi Ige
How do we know whether net-zero committed companies are taking action on climate change?
A fascinating study from Imperial College Business School explores this question, using a big dataset to evaluate the actions and activities that are most associated with impact and alignment.
Firms that are least aligned with climate goals are ones that over-index on protecting their reputation and protecting their current activities against change. Firms that are most aligned with climate goals are investing in the future in low-carbon energy, new products, and collaborative action.
Super interesting methodology and well worth a read! They also look at which SDGs are most associated with alignment.

Hi Everyone!
Here’s how the first The Sustainability Mafia , Climate Ninja master class went:
The first session dove deep into the science of climate change with Amit Pandey, the mastermind behind Do It Zero (DIZ). I had the privilege to listen to him for the second time after his session at TERI SAS through the TERI Susmafia student chapter. His session provided a clear breakdown of the causes and consequences of climate change, leaving no room for confusion. We even got to explore some interactive tools from Climate Interactive that helped us visualize the impact of different climate scenarios.
But understanding the problem is just half the battle. We also discussed about possible solutions and unpacked various strategies and initiatives that are paving the way for a more sustainable future.
