How do we know whether net-zero committed companies are taking action on climate change? A fascinating study from Imperial College Business School explores this question, using a big dataset to evaluate the actions and activities that are most associated with impact and alignment. Firms that are least aligned with climate goals are ones that over-index on protecting their reputation and protecting their current activities against change. Firms that are most aligned with climate goals are investing in the future in low-carbon energy, new products, and collaborative action. Super interesting methodology and well worth a read! Can technological inventions offer a viable solution to climate change? 🤔👀 As discussed yesterday, it is particularly elite men who are more willing than any other population group to accept environmental risks. They engage in carbon-intensive practices and advocate for profitable, techno-scientific solutions to counteract climate change, if they do not outright deny its existence.🧮 We will delve into the reasons behind this denial later. But for today... This approach is characterized by embracing technological advancements that are intended to be developed in the future to address our current problems.💾 This is not to dismiss all technological progress as irrelevant; undoubtedly, it will play a role in the solution.🔋 However, since it only addresses the consequences rather than the root cause of climate change, it can only provide partial relief.🪫 We cannot solve the problem with the same logic that created the problem. If we persist in the same mindset, thoughts, and identities, we cannot develop new logics and solutions. This post does not intend to assign blame. It aims to set the basis for further examination of the circumstances and structures that contribute to certain identities attaining power positions more frequently and exhibiting specific behaviors therein. This post aims to enhance the reflexion of our mindsets and identities that drive our behavior towards ourselves and others. Today, I am proud to share with you this video of the talk Carlos Terol gave at Innovation Zero. I consider Carlos to be my mentor on the journey towards tackling climate change. Since I met him, he has always inspired me to take steps forward as we work together to make Good Ripple possible. His talk should be included in every sustainability training because it is the foundation for achieving, as he says, the effect of amplifying and multiplying climate action. And how can we achieve this? In his talk, Carlos gives us super practical, real-world examples that we can apply in everyday situations. When we encounter people in different stages of the funnel, we sometimes don't know how to be assertive. It has happened to me! - Sometimes, we end up arguing with the deniers. - Some curious people are aware but quickly give up because they see the path as too long or difficult. - The motivated ones suffer from 'eco-anxiety' and live in an internal crisis that prevents them from moving forward. - When you are ready to make a collective impact, you feel that the effort to find the right people is too much. I have been there, in each and every phase. Like that friend who dreamed of having a Ferrari. But one day, you look back and see all the distance you have covered. And then, you realise how much your actions have contributed. You understand the reason why it's worth continuing to multiply. If you're interested, I 100% recommend watching the full video. Not sure I can catch these 3 take aways easily… Not crisis, not binary (agreed), not flow but stock. I’d like to take the occasion to point to my favorite reference in these matters, Mr. Jancovici. I think they might align globally on the kinds of response we can have. So, I can try to sum up some things : 1- supplies of fossile fuels are the basis of our western societies. Currently, access to them is becoming more expensive, and difficulties will keep increasing steadily, with local ups and downs. 2- the good question is : how do we plan this instead of blindly walking into a pitfall? Well, 1 main answer relevant in France is to enhance our nuclear production of electricity. Wether we like it or not, it’s our best available option, there is no known way around it, and not going for it will have consequences, real bad ones. 3- concerning « climate issues », I think I see some priorities. A- we’ve already killed 85% of what lives in the ocean. That’s a BIG mistake. And I don’t see how we solve this, I don’t even see how we stop the trend. B- I think focusing on Human is necessary, like Poverty, Health, Education might be a good one too. Earth will come on top of the coming centuries alright, humanity, not so sure we go through without a good stomping from our fellow apocalypse riders : War, Hunger, Disease. 4- Charles De Gaulle once said « war with russia would be very dumb, and expensive ». We might want to be sure we remember his advice and think twice in the future… We might want to invest our efforts right now on solidifying our countries, instead of trying to blow each other faces… I may be wrong, although I try not to be naive about those things, but I feel like history has shown us time and again how poor of a choice it was. How we can avoid those mistakes, I have no clear answer… yet… each individual trying his REAL best seems like an interesting alternate path. Anyone want to react ?
