Elevated levels of harmful bacteria have been found at Wales’ first official river bathing site. Wild swimmers have been advised to stay out of the River Wye at The Warren, a pebble beach near Hay-on-Wye, Powys, after high levels of E.coli and intestinal enterococci bacteria were found. The levels of both bacteria found were five and seven times higher respectively than the lowest quality standard considered "sufficient". Mr Bullough, of campaign group Friends of the River Wye, said: "These two bacteria are tested for because they are markers of the presence of sewage.”. Welsh Water said: “We are committed to playing our part to help protect river water quality. This is why we have invested £53m over the past 12 months on seven schemes to help improve the quality of the River Wye, which have all been completed ahead of schedule.”. #Water #Pollution #WaterPollution #Rivers #Environment #World #UK This content is jointly prepared by ZWEEC Analytics Pte Ltd and ripple2wave. The Environment Agency has reported that the number of bathing sites not meeting minimum standards doubled from 4.3 to 8.2 per cent last year. This is partly due to the increase in the number of designated bathing sites increasing from 424 in 2023 to 451 in 2024, but with growing interest in wild swimming among the British public, clean swimming water needs to be a priority. The lessons from the UK’s first wastewater micropollutant removal plant in Frankton, Warwickshire – due on stream early next year - we hope will inform other water companies looking to follow Severn Trent's lead. https://lnkd.in/e9YkRQsX #water #pollution #environment #micropollutants #wildswimming #rivers

Brilliant that our Head of Improving Rivers, John Bryden, featured in today's BBC News report on if "London's rivers can be swimmable by 2035". At a recent hearing of the London Assembly Environment Committee, John outlined how road runoff could be the biggest issue for the capital's rivers. This was featured in the story. He said one section of the Pymmes Brook in Enfield, North London, is so heavily polluted by runoff that only leeches can survive there. He added: "That's where we need to be getting into the detail and putting solutions in upstream so that pollution is held and treated in those wetlands and then we can remove that contamination." Our recent collaborative story about high levels of bacteria found in the River Roding has also featured in this story. Water - The Ultimate "Whole System" Issue! If ever there was an issue that demanded all the stakeholders to be in one room to solve an intractable problem, this is it. A couple of years ago I had the amazing experience of facilitating 5 Citizen Jury processes with Involve and the Environment Agency on waterways across England including Lake Windemere, the Thames and chalk streams at the Chilterns, the Thames Estuary, the River Wharfe at Ilkley and the Ouseburn in Newcastle. Each of these are unique and amazing places that have been systematically degraded over decades. All of the waterways have legitimate demands on them from recreational users, waste water treatment, water abstraction, and of course biodiversity. They are under attack from too much pollution, from farm runoff, from hard engineering, from plastic pollution, invasive species, extreme weather and I could go on. The conclusion from the citizen processes was that lots of stakeholders have a fundamental interest in the rivers being healthy, but they do not have robust mechanisms to deliver! No one benefits from a dirty dead lake or river. To transform the system requires all of these interests to collaborate, for policy, investment, regulation and enforcement, day to day management, all to converge and work together in the common interest. There are amazing people all over the country including campaigners like Becky Malby and Fergal Sharkey, people in The Rivers Trust, in community action like Thames21 . Everyone wants the same outcome - clean and healthy water. I would love to see #FutureSearch being used to move the conversation from awareness and blame to #commonground, #agreement and #implementation.

👇🏼Definitely worth 30mins of your time and reflection with Kurt Cordice presenting on Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Drowning Prevention and Aquatics.
Last week, I presented at the WAVES aquatic industry conference in Lower Hutt, Aotearoa New Zealand, once again hosted by the crew from Recreation Aotearoa | Te Whai Oranga. My presentation is now uploaded and available via the link below. This presentation highlights the international call to action for prioritising Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (J.E.D.I.) in drowning prevention, and its relevance here in Aotearoa New Zealand. The call to action was put forward by the delegates of the World Conference on Drowning Prevention in Perth (2023). This was my 5th WAVES conference (including the infamous COVID lockdown year), and my 5th presentation. My attendance and presentations over the years have focused on bringing both ‘Ethnic’ representation and greater advocacy for wider J.E.D.I. to aquatic industries in Aotearoa New Zealand. Has the needle moved? Well, it depends on your perspective. Mentioned in this talk: Water Safety New Zealand, Tangaroa Ararau, Ngati Porou SLS SLSC, Othering & Belonging Institute at UC Berkeley, Daniel Gerrard, Peter Boyd, Justin Scarr, Jagnoor Jagnoor, Life Saving Victoria, Canadian Red Cross, Tauranga City Council, Welcoming Australia, Simon Sinek, Merge NZ. Attention: Drowning Prevention Auckland, Surf Life Saving New Zealand, Coastguard New Zealand, Maritime New Zealand, Swimming New Zealand, Ed Accura, The Black Swimming Association (BSA), Diversity In Aquatics https://lnkd.in/gBMmMmzT

Special thanks to Lifesaving Society Canada for hosting another amazing webinar “Setting the Bar: Navigating and Implementing Lifesaving Society Standards” and great presentations by Sean Duffy (Ontario Vice President Management Training) and Brian Connors (National Standards Commissioner) explained how Lifesaving Society develops Safety Standards to enhance safety in aquatic facilities at national and provincial levels, SSC process approval map for standards development, the cycle of standards review, and commonly used references. It was great to know that Life Saving Society Ontario has an eye on the use of emerging technologies for drowning detection in swimming pools as an extra layer of safety, and hope to hear more in the future about regulating the use of emerging technologies in swimming pools as part of national safety standards in Canada. If you are interested to know about upcoming webinars or watching the above-mentioned webinar please visit: https://lnkd.in/gWnJTgyh #sensowarn #drowningprevention #lifesavingsocietycanada #lifegurds #watersafety #safetystandards #standards

Be aware of where you go swimming and surfing! The article from The Brockovich Report lists the top 10 most polluted beaches, highlighting severe water quality issues. Imperial Beach in San Diego tops the list due to chronic pollution from cross-border sewage and a failing treatment plant. Other polluted sites include Park View Kayak Launch in Miami, Ballard Park in Melbourne, and Playa Crashboat in Puerto Rico. This report emphasizes the dire state of U.S. beach water quality, with many locations exceeding unsafe bacteria levels due to outdated sewage infrastructure and stormwater runoff. https://lnkd.in/g8HrEhGK

Snow Day? It is snow problem for our rubber matting. Check out how our mats are used at Chill Factorᵉ, the longest indoor ski slope in the UK, based just outside of Manchester. Our rubber mats are sometimes referred to as 'snow mats' as they can be used to provide grip in snowy and icy conditions. Today seems like a good day to share this case study! #grassmats #snowmats #chillfactor #chillfactore https://lnkd.in/exycJ8Et
