Great news! Real-time water quality monitors are being installed at #wildswimming spots in Dorset, Somerset and Hampshire, and two coastal sites in Bournemouth. The #artificialintelligence-based monitoring system is designed to help people assess immediate risk of getting ill from water polluted with bacteria. Quoted in The Guardian, Ruth Barden, Director of Environmental Solutions at Wessex Water and Visiting Industrial Fellow at the University of Bath Institute for Sustainability, said "One of the biggest criticisms of the current bathing water classification system is that people may be swimming at a location all year, and it is only when the final classification is published that they realise what the quality has been. “We want people to be able to enjoy and use their watercourses without putting themselves in danger. But collecting this data is also helpful for us to understand what level of impact our assets are having on water quality – if any – and what the solutions could be to rectify that.” 👉 Read the article: https://lnkd.in/g-YMwEw7 #pollution #swimming #rivers #ai

The Environment Agency has reported that the number of bathing sites not meeting minimum standards doubled from 4.3 to 8.2 per cent last year. This is partly due to the increase in the number of designated bathing sites increasing from 424 in 2023 to 451 in 2024, but with growing interest in wild swimming among the British public, clean swimming water needs to be a priority. The lessons from the UK’s first wastewater micropollutant removal plant in Frankton, Warwickshire – due on stream early next year - we hope will inform other water companies looking to follow Severn Trent's lead. https://lnkd.in/e9YkRQsX #water #pollution #environment #micropollutants #wildswimming #rivers

With high temperatures forecast for the rest of this week and record drowning deaths Australia-wide this summer, more experts are calling for better access to public pools. Publicly accessible aquatic centres and pools provide a safe place for people to cool down and meet up with friends. They are the places where most of us learn to swim, and offer Victorians lifesaving swimming and water safety education. But as important as public pools are, not every Victorian has equal access. The outer Melbourne suburb of Melton only has one publicly accessible aquatic centre for every 178,960 people, compared to inner-city areas like Merri-bek and Yarra, with just over 30,000 residents per public pool facility. Our 2021 research report 'Social infrastructure in Melbourne's growth areas' found that while aquatic centre can be some of the most expensive social infrastructure to build, the benefits to communities far outweighs the cost. Special thanks to Lifesaving Society Canada for hosting another amazing webinar “Setting the Bar: Navigating and Implementing Lifesaving Society Standards” and great presentations by Sean Duffy (Ontario Vice President Management Training) and Brian Connors (National Standards Commissioner) explained how Lifesaving Society develops Safety Standards to enhance safety in aquatic facilities at national and provincial levels, SSC process approval map for standards development, the cycle of standards review, and commonly used references. It was great to know that Life Saving Society Ontario has an eye on the use of emerging technologies for drowning detection in swimming pools as an extra layer of safety, and hope to hear more in the future about regulating the use of emerging technologies in swimming pools as part of national safety standards in Canada. Elevated levels of harmful bacteria have been found at Wales’ first official river bathing site. Wild swimmers have been advised to stay out of the River Wye at The Warren, a pebble beach near Hay-on-Wye, Powys, after high levels of E.coli and intestinal enterococci bacteria were found. The levels of both bacteria found were five and seven times higher respectively than the lowest quality standard considered "sufficient". Mr Bullough, of campaign group Friends of the River Wye, said: "These two bacteria are tested for because they are markers of the presence of sewage.”. Welsh Water said: “We are committed to playing our part to help protect river water quality. This is why we have invested £53m over the past 12 months on seven schemes to help improve the quality of the River Wye, which have all been completed ahead of schedule.”. #Water #Pollution #WaterPollution #Rivers #Environment #World #UK This content is jointly prepared by ripple2wave and ZWEEC Analytics Pte Ltd. **Bathing Waters Matter** Last week I travelled to Manchester to join the Bathing Water Forum, an event organised by Surfers Against Sewage (SAS). SAS has been leading a campaign to support local groups achieve bathing water status for their favourite swimming spots. In May this year, the government announced 27 new sites had been awarded bathing water status. SAS was involved in 13 of these. The government then promptly suspended new applications and announced a review of the process! However, all is not lost. The Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) states on its website that it expects to reopen applications in 2025 and is currently consulting on the regulations – more on that below. After a welcome from Giles Bristow, CEO at SAS, we heard from Nathaniel Cole, a founder of Swim Dem Crew, who reminded us how much value clean outdoor swimming spaces add to our lives. We then heard from the Manningtree Mermaids and Shropshire Bathing Waters group about the importance of designated bathing waters. Both these groups led successful campaigns to achieve bathing water status and described the positive impact their campaigns had in their local communities. The day continued with workshops on what to do after achieving bathing water status, the power of using data to drive change, and the importance of reaching out and including diverse communities. A key takeaway from the day for me was this. Bathing Water Status isn’t a panacea. Achieving it won’t make the problem of sewage pollution disappear. However, it is a powerful awareness-raising tool and an important lever to apply additional pressure on water companies and the Environment Agency to clean up our waterways. Moreover, it is perhaps the most powerful direct action tool we have. Anyone can apply for bathing water status. Anyone can throw their weight behind a bathing water status campaign. And you don’t need to wait for DEFRA to reopen the application process to start finding out more and campaigning. As a first step, take a look at DEFRA’s bathing waters regulations consultation and respond if you can. https://lnkd.in/eSztVje7 Secondly, consider applying for bathing water status or supporting a campaign. SAS have a useful application toolkit on their Protecting Wild Waters website. https://lnkd.in/e7xqxp2P Surfers Against Sewage Thames21 Outdoor Swimmer

👇🏼Definitely worth 30mins of your time and reflection with Kurt Cordice presenting on Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Drowning Prevention and Aquatics.
Last week, I presented at the WAVES aquatic industry conference in Lower Hutt, Aotearoa New Zealand, once again hosted by the crew from Recreation Aotearoa | Te Whai Oranga. My presentation is now uploaded and available via the link below. This presentation highlights the international call to action for prioritising Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (J.E.D.I.) in drowning prevention, and its relevance here in Aotearoa New Zealand. The call to action was put forward by the delegates of the World Conference on Drowning Prevention in Perth (2023). This was my 5th WAVES conference (including the infamous COVID lockdown year), and my 5th presentation. My attendance and presentations over the years have focused on bringing both ‘Ethnic’ representation and greater advocacy for wider J.E.D.I. to aquatic industries in Aotearoa New Zealand. Has the needle moved? Well, it depends on your perspective. Mentioned in this talk: Water Safety New Zealand, Tangaroa Ararau, Ngati Porou SLS SLSC, Othering & Belonging Institute at UC Berkeley, Daniel Gerrard, Peter Boyd, Justin Scarr, Jagnoor Jagnoor, Life Saving Victoria, Canadian Red Cross, Tauranga City Council, Welcoming Australia, Simon Sinek, Merge NZ. Attention: Drowning Prevention Auckland, Surf Life Saving New Zealand, Coastguard New Zealand, Maritime New Zealand, Swimming New Zealand, Ed Accura, The Black Swimming Association (BSA), Diversity In Aquatics https://lnkd.in/gBMmMmzT
