I've been really engrossed in the ever-changing world of corporate leadership, and I recently stumbled upon a great read. It's an article from McKinsey called, "CEO Excellence: How do Leaders Assess Their Own Performance?" There's also a book with the same title, and both are absolute gems. If your reading list is already overflowing, the article does a superb job summing up the book’s key points. This article digs into what goes on in the minds of top executives and explores how they evaluate their own leadership. I found it super insightful — it lines up perfectly with what we often explore in my coaching sessions about the importance of self-awareness in leadership. One of the big themes here is the power of knowing yourself — your strengths and your weaknesses. The best CEOs have this down. They're always on the lookout for candid feedback to help them improve, something I stress a lot in coaching — introspection and honest self-assessment set the foundation for genuine growth. It also talks about the importance of having solid mentors and advisors. For any CEO navigating the complex business landscape, having a go-to person(s) for advice, guidance, and feedback can be incredibly valuable. And then there’s the point about being driven by more than just profit — thriving CEOs are those guided by a purpose and set of values that resonate deeply and are reflected in their leadership every day. They aim to make a real difference, not just hit financial targets. What or who inspired you to be a Leader? I chose to go into leadership because I liked to take lead and take decisions. Through a corporate program I got a mentor who inspired and guided me. As a Leader aspirant I could share my reflections on leadership dilemmas followed by a challenge session with questions. That made me go even deeper in the dilemmas and matured my ability to reflect and my understanding of leadership. I could also practice to give my mentor feedback. That gave my development a big boost. I was very strongly inspired by the way my mentor quickly created a trust-based relation to elevate me and support my growth journey. Another thing which had a strong impact on my development was my leader who supported my ambition. He created and gave me opportunities to perform and develop. Thinking back to that time it is very clear for me today that my leader also created visibility for me to show my skills and abilities to be seen by managers and other important people in the organization. I remember my leader said “Nobody wants a grumpy boss. Be a leader who you want to be led by” Today that is my leadership philosophy. 7 1/2 years later, I have my own leadership style and I daily lead through my leadership values. The journey I went through with my mentor and leader, I try to do the same with my employees. The name of my mentor was Marianne Baatrup Thystrup and my leader Morten Bay Alexandersen.
