Something to ponder during Women's History Month. These articles highlight the percent of women working in my disciplines -- education, healthcare, and the military. The question is whether the amount of women in leadership roles reflects the number of women in each industry's workforce. Women in healthcare - 77% Women in education - 75% Active duty women in our military - 18% https://lnkd.in/e2cPwEAM https://lnkd.in/eze8cjWV
Women have long played a pivotal role in our nation’s schools, where roughly three-quarters of the educator workforce is made up of women. This #WomensHistoryMonth, we honor all women supporting education - teachers, staff, parents, family, caregivers, & so many others. #WHM

Women have played a crucial role in society since the beginning of time. They have been the backbone of families, communities, and nations. It is important to acknowledge and appreciate the sacrifices and contributions that women have made throughout history. One of the most significant roles that women play is that of motherhood. The pain and struggles that women endure during childbirth are unimaginable. Many women have lost their lives in the process of bringing new life into the world. Despite the risks and challenges, women continue to bear children and raise families with love and dedication. It is essential for men to respect and honor women for their strength, resilience, and compassion. Without the support and partnership of women, society would not be able to thrive. Women deserve to be treated with dignity and equality in all aspects of life. In conclusion, women deserve to be celebrated and appreciated for their invaluable contributions to society. It is important for everyone, regardless of gender, to recognize the sacrifices and hardships that women have endured throughout history. Let us continue to support and uplift women in all areas of life, and may God bless women for all that they do.

Celebrating 35 Years of the UNCRC with East Riding of Yorkshire Council This week, we delivered the final workshop in our bespoke training series for the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Voices that Influence Team, where we championed the voices of children and young people as part of their new youth and child participation focus across the Council's systems, policies, processes, strategies and practice. This session coincided with the 35th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). This milestone reminds us of the importance of empowering young people to be heard, respected, and involved in shaping decisions that impact their lives. What We Did: 🎯 Training on Children’s Rights: We explored practical ways to embed children’s rights into daily practice using Laura Lundy's Model of Child Participation, helping teams turn theory into actionable strategies. 🎮 Gamifying CPD: Through the Advocacy Adventure Challenge, we designed a youth-friendly, fun way for teams to track their advocacy wins, reflect on challenges, and celebrate progress—all grounded in solution-focused actions. (👈 this has to be my favourite game that I have designed this whole year!) 🤝 We nurtured a safe and inclusive environment for open discussions, breaking down barriers to youth participation and generating innovative solutions. Team members were empowered to advocate for systemic change confidently, armed with solution-based approaches, the principles of the UNCRC, and statutory legal duties to substantiate every action and decision. Put all of this together, and you get a collaborative effort paving the way for more impactful, rights-based practices that centre the voices of children and young people. Thank you to Eve Walker and Nikki Wilson for their passion, commitment, and vulnerable leadership throughout this journey. Your dedication to embedding children’s rights into practice is awe-inspiring, so many others can learn from the team and culture you have co-created in public sector settings. One of the most powerful moments came from Participation People's Young Consultant, Azisa F., who reminded us: "Children's rights aren't just an add-on—they're the foundation of everything we do." We’re excited to see how this work unfolds in the months ahead as the Advocacy Adventure Challenge continues to inspire behaviour change and amplify the voices of children and young people. #UNCRC35 #ChildrensRights #YouthAdvocacy #PublicSector

Last Friday, I attended the Report On The Status Of Women And Girls In California, hosted by Mount Saint Mary’s University and written by my incredibly talented supervisor at CIME, Nicole Amber Haggard, PhD! This year’s report took a deeper look at the causes and outcomes of economic inequality that women and girls in California face. The statistics are absolutely shocking… 💰 Though California is the state with the smallest gender wage gap-- women making 89c to every dollar a white man earns— this disparity still results in a lifetime earnings gap of around $1,397,840. 🎓 Fewer 529 college savings plans are opened for young girls than for boys— 39% of young girls, vs 50% of young boys, have one. 🏥 Women in California are more likely to forego medical care because of higher our of pocket costs and insurance premiums, meaning women spend 15.4 billion dollars more annually on healthcare than men. That’s BILLION… with a B. 🤱 In 2023, 65% of California’s new mothers were still in the labor force. (This should qualify as cruel and unusual punishment tbh) 💌 Less than 2% of philanthropic dollars to go women and girls. I am lucky to work within that 2%, with the Lyda Hill Philanthropy, and towards our mission to close the gender wage gap with real workforce interventions. The financial and physical health of our country depends on women’s economic and domestic liberation and empowerment. As we honor Women in Medicine and National Latinx Heritage Months, #StanDOM's Shawna Follis, PhD, MS, reminds us of the critical need to support Latina women in higher education. With Latina and underrepresented minority (URM) representation declining, our future success in medicine depends on proactive efforts to prevent exclusion and create equitable pathways for all students.
