Celebrating (belatedly) the start of Eleven International | Strategic Tech PR Agency for USA, UK, China, SEA Markets' 8th year. We've expanded to service new markets, but let's be real. The challenges of scaling a boutique cross border agency with clients from diverse regions with their own unique ways of partnering with an agency (like ours), is understated. And that segues into the prevailing theme that permeated our 7th year -- risk management. As with many challenges, there's often a blessing in disguise. Beyond delivering consistent results, managing risk has become a key strength of ours that's allowed us to increasingly take on 4A-sized projects & budgets (including payables). And suffice to say, larger firms are keeping tabs on our growth. (In fact, to this note, keep your eyes peeled, we'll have more news to share in the coming months.)

It began with anniversaries which (the clue is in the word) celebrate a whole year of something. Then six month "anniversaries" showing both a fundamental ignorance of the concept and what turned out to be a worrying trend towards short-termism especially in inter-personal relationships. The one-week "anniversary" is a terrifying commentary on expectations and, even worse, when it celebrates "when we met." We seem to have reached a situation where events that aren't even milestones are marked. Is that because we now expect to live transient lives in relationships that include life and work? When it's a cause for celebration in an office, with celebratory cakes with a message, when someone remains in a job for two years, that fills me with trepediation. Do people really think that they can get a grip on the culture of a complex organisation, learn the job in the way the company does it, and perform to the best possible (not, merely, that person's best because everyone can always do better) standard with one eye on the door ? Surely we should not think this is a good thing. Surely we should wonder why, if it's not the norm, it isn't and find out what is going wrong. And yes, this was prompted by a publicly available social media post of just such a celebration in an office. I just hope it didn't get added to a client's time ledger. #shorttermism #employment #culture #organisation #morriscotterill #timerecording

I am celebrating my one year work anniversary at GableGotwals! 🌟 My first year as a lawyer overlapped with my first year as a new mom — which was daunting, to say the least. I worried and wondered how it would all work out: childcare, balancing, keeping up. Being a working mom is tough, because it is very easy to feel like you are failing at everything. “I’m not a good enough lawyer because I’m a mom. I’m not a good enough mom because I’m a lawyer.” My colleagues and mentors at GableGotwals have actively and ardently worked to alleviate these insecurities. I have received constant support, encouragement, and understanding during my first year of practice. Thinking back, I recall so many examples of my colleagues going out of their way to tell me: “Great work.” “I appreciate you.” “You belong here.” “We couldn’t have done this without you.” As a new lawyer, you need a safe place to learn. You need people who speak highly of you to your face and behind closed doors. You need examples of integrity and excellence to model after. You need community and friendship. You need leadership that you can trust and believe in. I have all of that and more at GableGotwals. This is the best firm, and it’s because of the people. I have learned so much about law practice this year, and I intend to keep learning. But, I have also learned so much about the type of person I want to be—and that makes all the difference. Here’s to year two, and hopefully many more after that!
