Ofentse Monye is an accredited paralegal from the South African Law School and a current LLB student at the University of South Africa/Universiteit van Suid-Afrika. Her academic journey reflects a commitment to legal excellence, coupled with a strong drive to develop practical skills. During her studies, Ofentse joined the UNISA Black Lawyers Association Unisa-Tshwane. Student Chapter (BLASC), where she actively engaged with fellow aspiring legal professionals and explored the pressing legal issues faced by South African communities. This experience has deepened her understanding of the role law plays in addressing societal challenges. In addition to her academic pursuits, Offenses has gained valuable hands-on experience by completing her practical training at a law firm. This opportunity allowed her to work on various cases, refining her ability to navigate the complexities of legal practice. By combining theoretical knowledge with practical expertise, Ofentse is equipping herself to make a meaningful impact within the legal profession. “To me, a centenary represents more than just a passage of 100 years; it’s an opportunity to reflect on the social, political, and economic progress made over a century. Sociologically, it highlights how societies evolve, adapt, and reshape their cultural norms. Politically, it can mark critical milestones in governance, democracy, or struggles for justice and equality. Economically, a centenary can showcase the long-term impact of policies, growth patterns, and how economic shifts have affected people’s lives. It’s a moment to critically assess these developments and consider the lessons learned for the future.” #100more #CountMeIn #WomenInLaw

Glad to contribute an essay, "Balance in Copyright Law," to the latest issue of our school's magazine, the Cumberland Lawyer. You can click the link below to see the whole thing (on p. 15), but here's the start: Copyright is a lot of fun, but it’s also serious business. How is it fun? Students love to learn—and I love to teach—how the law applies to art like music and movies. How’s it serious? As Professor Yochai Benkler has observed, “It is about the future of the freedom to be as social beings with each other and the way information, knowledge, and culture will be produced.” In sum, if we don’t protect art by requiring consent for its use, we risk getting less of it, and we risk alienating its creators. But if we overprotect it, we risk the same. This may seem paradoxical, but it’s not. It’s balance. And balance is at the heart of not just copyright, but the law in general. Too little law, and we invite injustice. Too much, we stifle freedom. And in the case of copyright, what’s at risk is a particularly vital freedom: speech. . . .
The 2024 edition of Cumberland Lawyer magazine is out! In the issue, we're proud to feature first-generation law students and lawyers who are breaking generational barriers, important work being done by our incredible faculty, our Distinguished Alumni of the Year, highlights from the inaugural Scotland study abroad program this summer, and so much more! Congratulations to University of Georgia School of Law 2L Madison Graham for her recent feature in The National Jurist magazine! Madison shares some of her reflections on the value of studying abroad through Global Governance Summer School & Global Externships Overseas: “As someone already interested in international law, it was really special to see other people who didn’t think that they were interested in it start to challenge their own perspectives, start to realize how ‘international’ law pervades domestic practice, and the scope of international opportunities that exist in the American legal context. Also, I think it is really important for American law students to recognize and remember that there is an entire world out there handling the same legal challenges we are, and often in a different way...The opportunities [study abroad] provides from an educational and professional perspective are unlike ones I have seen at any other law school, and something every student should consider doing.” Read more in the Dean Rusk International Law Center's most recent Exchange of Notes post, linked below.

How big is your General LL.M./LL.M. for Foreign Lawyers program? ABA Statistics don't tell us because they do not break out Non-J.D. programs by type.
