📢 Today we launch a new report developed in collaboration with the Welsh NHS Confederation and the Northern Ireland Confederation for Health and Social Care. The report examines diversity in boards across the healthcare system in Wales and Northern Ireland. Twenty healthcare boards across Wales and Northern Ireland provided insights into some of the enablers, and barriers to creating diverse boardrooms. The research found that there is more to be done to ensure benefits of diverse boards are fully realised. It calls for: ✅ Diversity data within NHS boards to be accessible, transparent and publicly available. ✅ Healthcare leaders to proactively embed a strategic approach to diversity and inclusion within boards. It was great to be at the #ICSNetwork conference yesterday, run by NHS Confederation. One of my big takeaways is that we have cause to be optimistic! We have a lot of answers, our collective challenge now is delivering answers at scale, and I was really struck by a quote from Paul Corrigan that 'the future is happening but not evenly'; which is to say that in every system there are elements of the 'big three shifts' already under way. However the public experience of health and care are that these services are 'broken'. This experience is in part created by personal interaction with services (waiting for a planned procedure, waiting to see a GP), but it is confirmed by the mainstream narrative of failure. We need to find a way of talking about service reform which acknowledges that current models need to change, but that we also have a lot of answers, the task now is to role out the success stories at great enough scale to change the public experience. Communities, people working in health and care, patients, carers, families can all play a part in making a success of reform; but only if the evidence of progress, learning, and success is shared. #NHS #caretransformation #healthinnovation

In a recent survey, public satisfaction with the NHS plummeted to its lowest level ever. It's a stark statistic that signals a clarion call for introspection and action. Let's unpack this. The NHS, our beacon of universal healthcare, is under unprecedented strain. Factors such as resource limitations, frontline workforce pressures, and the relentless demands of an evolving health crisis are taking a toll. The resulting impact on patient experience is now reflected in survey numbers that cannot and should not be ignored. Yet, while current satisfaction levels are disconcerting, they are also a testament to the unwavering expectations we, as citizens, hold for healthcare excellence. This is less an indictment and more an opportunity. An opportunity for reform, innovation, and renewed commitment to the healthcare covenant between the NHS and the public it serves. Through adversity can come transformative change. The NHS has a storied history of resilience and adaptation. Now, more than ever, a collaborative ethos is essential. It's time for policymakers, healthcare professionals, and the community to engage in a constructive dialogue that yields pragmatic strategies and sustainable improvements.
