We must ensure that mining across the world is conducted in a responsible way that upholds human rights and minimizes adverse environmental impacts. A new brief from Mighty Earth and Rainforest Foundation Norway analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of mining standards in addressing biodiversity and deforestation. We examined the limitations of three existing mining standards IRMA Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance The Copper Mark/RMI and Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) to avoid deforestation and minimize impacts on critical ecosystems like rainforests. Conserving tropical rainforests and stopping deforestation is critical to meet our global biodiversity and climate goals, but tropical forests are being disproportionately impacted by mining activities. Across standards, there is the need to strengthen the language and the set of indicators that can be used to ensure that mining companies are undertaking measurable steps to avoid and minimize overall land use change and deforestation. Land use change is the most important driver of biodiversity loss, and the most apparent environmental impact of extractive activities is often linked to land use change and deforestation. Thus, focusing on land use change indicators is the best way to implement the mitigation hierarchy and prevent negative impacts on biodiversity.

Not every mining standard is created equal, and automakers need to be aware of the strengths and shortcomings of various standards in order to continue to make progress on responsible sourcing, avoid due diligence fines, and protect themselves from risk. Check out this analysis from Mighty Earth and Rainforest Foundation Norway of the limitations of three existing mining standards: IRMA Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance The Copper Mark/RMI and Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM). They took a look at how these three different standards work to avoid deforestation and minimize impacts of mining on critical ecosystems like rainforests.

🌳 Bloody Gold: Miners Are Razing At-Risk Forests to the Point of No Return! ⛏️ As global leaders gather for COP16, a new report from the World Resources Institute (WRI) highlights the alarming surge in mining activities decimating tropical and endangered forests—critical carbon sinks essential for combating climate change. 🔎 What You Need to Know: 1️⃣ Accelerating Deforestation: The WRI report reveals that mining contributed to the loss of 1.4 million hectares of forests between 2000 and 2020, an area comparable to Montenegro. This represents a 52% increase in mining activities, leading to the release of 36 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions annually—equivalent to Finland's fossil fuel emissions in 2022. 2️⃣ Disproportionate Impact on Vulnerable Ecosystems: Although mining accounts for a smaller global tree cover loss than forestry and fire, its effects are particularly pronounced in tropical primary rainforests and Indigenous territories. Of the total forest loss, 450,000 hectares were in tropical primary rainforests, underscoring the urgent need to protect these irreplaceable ecosystems. 3️⃣ Call for Action: The WRI urges global governments to implement reforms that empower forest defenders and manage demand for mined materials. This includes promoting responsible mining practices, enforcing stringent environmental regulations, and enhancing traceability within the supply chain. 🔗 To read more about the impacts of mining on global forests and the urgent need for reform, click here: https://lnkd.in/eJwWUSxf 🗣️ #questionforgroup: How can the mining industry balance resource extraction with environmental conservation? Mining has increased rapidly amid the rush for energy transition minerals. The effects of this have impacted human rights, biodiversity loss, wildlife harm, environmental degradation, and health. Indigenous Peoples, whose lands make up more than half of transition minerals, remain the most vulnerable to these effects. Our Executive Director, Galina Angarova, and Edson krenak, SIRGE's Executive Committee member and Advocacy Coordinator at Cultural Survival share insights during our press briefing.
