What can we learn from Philosophy in Coaching? The philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty points out that when we touch a table, we feel that table and at the same time we also feel ourselves. We notice that it is our self that’s touching the table. Most of the time we’re not aware because our attention is with the table, or any other subject. This can happen in coaching too, when we’re exploring a table, instead of a person. Any circumstance automatically evokes an awareness of the self that is dealing with that circumstance. Any crisis we go through automatically evokes learning how the self is dealing with it. This will bring positive and negative aspects of the self to light. Things we like to see and things we don’t like to see within our selves. Coaching is about creating more awareness of the experience and the learning about the self that is touching upon a subject. Ask yourself, am I dealing with a table? Or with how I experience that table and what I learn about myself experiencing that table?

Personally, I struggle with the term Coach. I find it uncomfortable. I worry about it being misunderstood, and that people believe the role of a coach involves telling or advising someone else how to think, feel, act, or live. So what is it? For me personally, coaching is about really listening, learning and doing whatever I can to truly understand the person next to me. Whether it be online, sitting with or walking beside them. Giving them the space they rarely have to deeply think and be able to articulate who they really are and why they are, without judgement. Understanding their challenges and what they want to work towards. It’s then about learning how I can best support them through that process. I really enjoy showering in the dark. Yes, I am going to tie this into coaching! 😁 The dark removes a large set of perceptions. I can focus on the enjoyable sensations of the water instead of being distracted by what I see. (I could just close my eyes but it's not the same 🤓). And in coaching, we can really underestimate how strongly we are coming at the client. We're so excited about the freedom of this that we throw intervention after pointer after question at them. I have definitely done this. 🙋♀️ And it's not bad per se, we're just passionate! It may even seem like a lot is happening. The client seems to be "getting it." They even seem happy about "insights" but they were your insights not theirs. We need to be really attentive to effortless unfolding vs. our own desire to push/pull at the process, or to teach and preach (usually what worked for us). Instead of trying to manage this with yet another framework or method, we recommend orienting to 10 principles (see our NDLCA page and website for more). They ensure coaching is never about you and in tune with what is unfolding naturally. Have you had a closer look at the principles? What do you think?

Are you coaching from a methodology? I did for 15 years. The results were so-so because the methods didn't remove my needs, filters, biases, assumptions, judgments, opinions, roles, knowledge, teachings, desires, attitudes, hopes, intentions, fears, wishes, beliefs, anxiety, or interests from the coaching. Conventional coaching methods strengthened the focus on me, the coach, who was going to make something happen for/with the client. Self-less coaching turns this on its head. You as a coach are the main limitation in coaching. But no need to try to remove your self. Instead, there are 10 principles we can learn to coach from that effortlessly produce self-less coaching, which unleashes all the possibility available to us in self-less presence. -------------- Follow NDLCA for everything about the art and business of self-less coaching for coaches.

😕 But I Want To Coach All Different Kinds Of People! Great! So you should! Coaching is a superpower and should be shared with the world like all superpowers should be shared. Contrary to popular belief, if you choose a niche and focus all your efforts within that niche, you DO still end up working with a huge variety of clients. (An added bonus is that you also get those potential clients coming to you - you never have to feel pushy again!) LET ME EXPLAIN You know that no two clients are the same, right? Even if two people come to coaching with an almost identical issue, their routes out of it will be utterly different, won’t they? It’s absurd to think that having a niche could mean that you’d only ever experience session after session of identical coaching - how could that even be possible? If you’ve been resisting the urge to niche because you think it will limit the type of clients you can coach - think again. Niching increases your visibility exponentially and therefore the number of people who want to reach out to you for help also increases. Perhaps we should talk about how this could work for you? Hey Coach, Coaching is my calling, and I'm drawn to it with unwavering enthusiasm. Besides motherhood, I've never felt such a deep passion and connection to a pursuit. My innate qualities make me a natural fit for coaching: - I see greatness in others and am driven to help them unlock it - I'm approachable, relatable, and personable, making connections effortless - I'm bold and confident, empowering others to embrace their own strengths - I articulate thoughts and ideas with clarity and precision - I'm patient and compassionate, creating a safe space for growth - I'm honest and trustworthy, fostering strong relationships built on integrity While I'm not one to boast, I recognize these qualities as a calling to pour into others and make a meaningful impact. Coaching isn't just a desire; it's my purpose.

Six years of coaching have taught me a lot. I've learned when to push and when to pull back. I can sense it in my body. The aches, the stiffness from sitting too long. But there's something I've discovered. I'm happiest and healthiest when I move. It's not just about me. It's about showing up for my family, friends, and work. Being active isn't just a choice. It's a balance. Listening to my body. Tuning in to how I feel. Coaching has been a revelation. It's shown me how to adapt movements. Understanding that sometimes, it's not about how heavy or how fast. It's about form and quality. So here's to movement. Here's to balance. Here's to showing up, every day. Because in the end, it's all about feeling good. And doing good. That's the true power of movement. That's the true power of coaching.

Het is bijna goed en het moet fundamenteel anders.
8moMooie uitspraak en heel erg van toepassing in coaching. Waar schrijft Merleau Ponty dat?
