I love working with George Darrah and the guys at Systemiq Capital to help build the investment thesis for system change to regenerative agriculture. It’s rewarding to see the space emerge and evolve from so many angles - farmer, entrepreneur and investor (not me, George 😉)! #regenerativefarming #vc #venturecapital #regenag #investing #naturalcapital
We made our first foray into agtech earlier this year, joining Shely Aronov and the incredible InnerPlant team. It took time for us to build conviction in an area we often hear is too hard to build very big and profitable companies. We're told it's because farmers move too slowly. 'Agtech has an adoption problem'. But the truth is far more nuanced. Here is the opportunity hiding in plain sight. Build products that lots of farmers absolutely love. 🌽 👩🌾 😍 And they will move FAST. You could even say agtech has a product problem...! Ben Chostner and I had fun putting this together. It might even kick a mini-series off... I'll be at World Agri-Tech next week in London. If you're building an incredible product for farmers, please get in touch. 👁️ A Vision for Systemic Change in Agriculture. Real progress in agriculture isn’t about quick fixes; it’s about systemic change. After 4 years within the diverse AgUnity ecosystem in over 9 countries, I’ve gained a deep understanding of what it takes to make this happen. Years of experience in the field has guided AgUnity's approach to digitisation at an organisational level, making systemic change possible on a structural scale. However, we’ve learned that every value chain is unique, with different entry points based on region, harvest timelines, specific challenges and more. Recent achievements with the Co-op Manager, digitising records of over 40,000 farmers in Africa, and efforts to raise a practical understanding of EUDR and CS3D regulations have been pivotal. AgUnity is also preparing the market for a future commodity marketplace that genuinely works for smallholder farming communities. By digitising processes and building cooperative ecosystems, we’re laying the groundwork for a future where every stakeholder—from smallholder farmers to global buyers—is connected and empowered. This is one part of the pursuit to ensure agriculture can flourish sustainably for future generations. With increasing input costs and stagnant-to-decreasing market prices, adopting sustainable practices hasn't been as big of a priority as it could or should be for many farmers in recent years. While carbon offsetting has been the go-to approach for large food corporations, carbon insetting, where every livestock value chain member collectively works to drive down greenhouse-gas emissions within their shared supply chain, is better enabling these stakeholders to make collective progress in achieving Scope 3 emissions reduction goals. Athian, a High Alpha Innovation portfolio company created in partnership with Elanco, was built to benchmark, verify, and monetize on-farm greenhouse gas reductions. We spoke with Athian CEO Paul Myer to discuss his family's history of farming, ag industry transformation, and how Athian is working to address a longstanding problem facing farmers and other members of the food value chain. https://lnkd.in/gH9R7CyA #AgriFood #AgTech #VentureBuilding

The Journey of Corporate Farming: From Traditional Fields to Agribusiness Giants 🌾 Corporate farming has come a long way, transforming agriculture from family-owned farms to massive agribusinesses. Here's a brief look at this evolution: 1️⃣ Early Beginnings: Agriculture has traditionally been family-run, with smallholders producing food for local communities. These farms were modest, relying on traditional practices. 2️⃣ Green Revolution (1940s-60s): With advancements in technology, including high-yielding seeds and chemical fertilizers, farming saw a productivity boost. Corporations began investing in agriculture to capitalize on new technologies and economies of scale. 3️⃣ Rise of Agribusiness (1970s-90s): Corporations recognized farming's profit potential, entering the sector with large-scale operations. This era saw the consolidation of small farms and the birth of agricultural giants. Corporate farms prioritized efficiency, mechanization, and supply chain integration. 4️⃣ Sustainability & Tech Innovation (2000s-present): Modern corporate farming has been driven by sustainability, biotechnology, and digital innovations. Precision agriculture, data analytics, and AI are now commonplace, making farming more efficient and sustainable. Corporate farming is evolving with a renewed focus on sustainability and ethical practices, addressing global challenges like food security and climate change. 🌍 --- #CorporateFarming #Agribusiness #SustainableAgriculture #FarmingInnovation #AgriTech #LinkedIn
