March is Social Work Month. We want to give a shoutout to our fellow social workers! The demand for social workers is reflected in the statistics. Did you know that by 2030 there will be more than 782,00 social workers in the United States? This makes social work one of the fastest growing professions in the United States. This year's Social Work Month theme is Empowering Social Workers. Across our country, social workers are on the frontlines, behind the scenes, and leading the way in serving and supporting individuals, families, and communities struggling with mental health challenges, homelessness, opioid addiction, and economic and social inequalities, to name a few. We are asking the public to support social workers to improve our bottom line by supporting legislation to access the Mental Health Act, loan forgiveness to cancel student debt, and social work safety legislation. 📢 First Magazine Shows: Social Care Workforce at Breaking Point Our latest report reveal the critical workforce crisis facing adult social care in the UK. With a 16% vacancy rate and rising dependence on costly agency staff, councils are struggling to fill essential roles, leaving significant gaps in support for those in need. Key findings show that: 87% of councils face recruitment challenges for qualified mental health social workers. 55% report that low wages are driving staff to leave. £292 million projected agency costs for 2023/24, up from last year. Cllr David Fothergill, Chairman of the LGA’s Community Wellbeing Board, emphasises the urgent need for a fully funded workforce strategy and fair pay for social care professionals. ‘Fair pay’ for adult social care staff - as trailed in the manifesto, the King’s Speech included provisions to introduce a fair pay agreement for adult social care staff, which will form part of an Employment Rights Bill. The Labour manifesto said this would set fair pay, terms and conditions, along with training standards, for care staff, and would be based on consultation with trade unions and providers. Unison welcomed the plan, with general secretary Christina McAnea saying: “After years of government neglect, the fair pay agreement is the first sign things are set to change [for social care]…Once the new pay agreement is in place, wages in care will rise across England, easing the sector’s staffing nightmare and relieving pressure on the NHS.” 'A Workforce Strategy for adult social care in England' published today and developed by Skills for Care in collaboration with the entire adult social care sector, identifies fair pay as the crucial factor for recruitment and retention - which, of course, provides better outcomes for people supported in adult social care. https://lnkd.in/eZzaVJ2T

🗣 Social care workers feel more valued for the work they do than they did last year, but well-being and pay are still a concern according to our second annual ‘Have Your Say’ workforce survey. We carried out this survey between January and February 2024. In total, 5,024 social care workers responded, from a wide range of roles. This was an increase of almost 2,000 on the number who responded last year. It won’t be long when “larger development practitioners/organisations” themselves replace the local grassroots organisations. The end is near when “they” become our decision makers of whom to support and whom to ignore! The ignorance towards crisis affected children, adolescents and young vulnerable populations is just the tip of the iceberg. The fight for community driven work will just collapse with the rise of bureaucracy and top down hierarchical advocacy will prevail again! I often complain about Manipur and the lost of opportunities for young people and grassroots organisations because of the conflict. Unknowingly some of the young organisations might have perished without your knowledge. Ours equally, are also on the verge of collapse if the crisis persist for another year. Tragically whenever I speak to other organisations and agencies, the answer often is “Oh! is it still going on?” . It breaks my heart not because they don’t know but because our issues have been wiped off from the mainstream. We often talk about “Leave No One Behind” and it seemed genuine earlier. But now it has become just another phrase to look “cool” and “inclusive”. Ironically there is no grace period or extensions for submission of proposals or considerations to include our voices in platforms because we have been left way behind. I just feel overwhelmed thinking of the moment, the community have to beg for help from the people/ office bearers of development agencies who draws their salary and livelihoods in the name of the community. #whatweneed is the acknowledgement of crisis young people and organisations are facing due to conflict and war and the need for meaningful participation in decision making to provide support during emergencies for their welfare. #community #support #work #livelihoods #jobs #csr #
