Today Cbamboo announces its £1m pre-seed funding round led by Pale blue dot and supported by Mudcake (prev. Trellis Road), PUSH, Prequel Ventures and angel investors. Today’s global firms know they must tackle carbon emissions in their supply chain. But they struggle to respond to the EU’s flagship climate policy, #CBAM. The new rules are confusing and demanding — the software to master CBAM simply doesn’t exist. We’ve built Cbamboo to meet that need. Our platform puts the needs of the CBAM user first. Our compliance tools enable accurate and speedy filing of CBAM reports. In the coming months, Cbamboo will become a one-stop CBAM solution for the global supply chain, guiding manufacturers and distributors through the new rules and helping them track and securely share mandatory data with their customers. From getting LP pitched on the beach to navigating the tech reset and evolving through challenges, my conversation with Bogdan Iordache (Underline Ventures) & Carlos Eduardo Espinal MBE (Seedcamp) for today's EUVC episode was a truly special one. Here's some stand-out quotes that stayed with me: Bogdan: "I was in Bulgaria with my family, on the beach sunbathing. And I was approached by someone who wanted to invest in my fund. Not once, but twice, completely independently of each other! It was crazy." Carlos: "The bubble was a very strange period because it was a period when everyone in the world who had capital was looking for a way of making returns in excess of the overall stock market or interest rates." - Carlos Eduardo Espinal Carlos: "Fundraising, for anybody who's raising right now, is such an educational experience. I get so much every time we fundraise because I get insights as to what, not only what other GPs are saying to these potential LPs, but what are the sensitive points for where you are right now Bogdan: "We started raising Underline Ventures for our first fund at the end of 2021, and we did the first closing at the beginning of 2022, just one week before Russia invaded Ukraine, adding to the general complexity of the changing VC landscape [...] If we had not been able to do the first closing at the beginning of the year, then it would have been just impossible to raise the rest of the fund. The dynamic completely changed, and interest dropped off a cliff." Carlos: "One of the things that we have observed since the beginning of Seedcamp is how much it takes a local hero, a local champion, if you will, to really elevate an ecosystem [...] It takes a local hero, a local champion, to really elevate an ecosystem. What Bogdan has done for Romania is a testament to that, maybe a story worth telling multiple times [...] So what we've done [with our LP investing] is with people that we've worked closely with, and Bogdan is one of them, we wanted to just give a little bit of support, to help them along the way." Bogdan: "It has been a decade in the making, this fund. Not only did we raise the funding, host the event, bring the speakers, but we also brought people from all over the world to come and learn from each other, building a community that now truly powers the Romanian ecosystem." Yesterday, there was a seismic shift in Australia's Climate Tech scene.   Sumday completed a $5.3M seed round, and I love it for 3 key reasons.   1. This is the first international investment from renowned Climate Tech investor Sophie Purdom's New York-based VC fund Planeteer Capital. A big deal globally. Go Australia!   2. An Aussie start-up being funded by a US VC to take on the world. Who said Silicon Valley was the centre of the start-up world? Jason Calacanis, eat your heart out! 😁   3. Sumday is a Tasmanian start-up. Seven years ago today, on January 31st, 2018, an important personal, professional milestone was achieved with the first closing of our first Speedinvest x Fund, also known as Speedinvest Network Effects. It also marks the day when we officially announced that I had joined Speedinvest as a Partner to launch and build up not only our Berlin-office but also what today is our 9 investors strong Marketplaces & Consumer team that has led early investments in companies such as CoachHub - The digital coaching platform, TIER Mobility, Schüttflix, Timberhub, Planetly or Kittl just to name a few. Reflecting on that day, it feels like a serendipitous moment as we announce the final close of our €350M flagship seed fund, Speedinvest 4, exceeding our target by €50M. It's a testament to how far we've come as a firm, now operating one large fund across six sector-focused, highly specialized teams. And believe me, we're just warming up!
