In the crowded world of food and biotech, Shiru isn’t just turning heads—it’s rewriting the damn playbook. This isn’t your average AI-for-protein startup; this is Jasmin Hume, PhD and her team putting big data, science, and AI in the same room and cranking the dial to eleven. Fresh off a $16 million Series B raise led by S2G Ventures, and with CPT Capital, Lux Capital, Nourish Ventures, and Meach Cove Capital, LLC all in, Shiru’s not just getting funded—it’s getting an arsenal to light a fire under traditional ingredient discovery. Shiru’s California HQ is buzzing, fueled by the company’s monster database of 33 million molecules and a tech stack that’s more precision-tuned than a Formula 1 car. Their secret weapon? The ProteinDiscovery.ai marketplace, powered by the Flourish™ AI engine and the heavy-hitting Expressor tool for protein expression. We’re talking faster, leaner, and more accurate than ever before. The old-school R&D process? Outdated, collecting dust, while Shiru is turning years into months if not weeks. And here’s where it gets interesting—Shiru’s tech isn’t just staying in the lab. They’ve secured top-tier partnerships with Griffith Foods and Ajinomoto Health & Nutrition North America, Inc., and their applications are branching out into some unexpected (and very lucrative) fields: think food ingredients, flavor innovation, skincare, and even biopesticides. They’re already winning awards—TIME just named them one of 2024’s Best Inventions—and now, with this cash injection, they’re primed to break ground in entirely new markets. What’s next? Shiru’s ready to scale their ProteinDiscovery.ai, deepen their IP moat, and dig into a future where your food, skincare, and even agricultural solutions are designed by AI and built to last. Dr. Hume’s mission? To turn nature’s most powerful building blocks into sustainable products for the future. The protein revolution isn’t coming—it’s already here, and Shiru’s holding the keys. #BioTech #FoodTech #AIBioTech #Nutrition #HealthTech #ProteinExpression #PunchingAboveMyWeightClassWithThisOne #VentureCapital #StartupFunding #TechEcosystem #StartupEcosystem #SkinCare #Startups

💰🌱🥩 Startup secures funding to scale production of its fat replacement solution. MicroLub, a deep-tech spinout from the University of Leeds, raised £3.5 million in seed funding to help commercialize its fat replacement technology. The company plans to use the funds to develop products, scale its technology with partners, and expand its team. The company’s plant-based protein microgel mimics the texture of fats, adding lubrication to food and creating a creamy sensation similar to full-fat products. This technology allows manufacturers to remove thickeners and emulsifiers, leading to cleaner labels. CEO David Peters highlighted how the technology could help solve issues with texture and mouthfeel, making plant-based products more appealing. Founder and CTO Anwesha Sarkar said the funding will help explore more applications and bring the technology to market. In the vibrant landscape of today's market, the quest for sustainable protein sources is more than just a trend—it's a canvas for innovation. One of the most compelling stories in this arena comes from Ÿnsect, which has made a significant leap with genotyping chip technology. This isn't just about pushing the boundaries of technology; it's a profound step forward in sustainable protein production. 🌱 Through the lens of genotyping, Ÿnsect is revolutionizing how we cultivate mealworms, enhancing not just the efficiency of the process but also the quality of the protein produced. It's a clear demonstration of how marrying genetic research with sustainable farming practices can open new doors to meet the growing demand for eco-friendly protein sources. This narrative isn't unique to Ÿnsect. Across the globe, from the cultivation of Black Soldier Fly larvae by CYNS in Latin America to the pioneering work on mycelium as a protein alternative by 70/30 Food Sci & Tech in Asia, we're witnessing a consistent strategy: the use of cutting-edge technology to foster sustainable growth in the food sector. For entrepreneurs and innovators charting their course in the startup world, the message is clear. Sustainability and technology aren't just parallel paths but are intertwined, forming the backbone of future-proof businesses. Embracing these principles not only helps carve out a niche but positions your venture as a leader in the march towards a sustainable future. As someone deeply embedded in the journey of innovation, I've seen firsthand how integrating sustainability and innovation can not only address current market and environmental challenges but also anticipate future ones. It's about thinking beyond the immediate, looking at how our actions today shape the world we live in tomorrow. So, to all the entrepreneurs and innovators out there, I encourage you to think about how your ventures can contribute to this narrative. How are you using innovation and sustainability to make a difference? The path we choose today shapes the world of tomorrow, and it's up to us to make it a better place. 🇩🇰 🇫🇮 Twor Nordics alternative protein startups received regulatory approval in the US. 1️⃣ 21st.BIO, a Danish startup is now "self-affirmed GRAS" in the US for its precision fermentation-made whey protein (a dairy protein). It can now sell the protein to manufacturers so they can use it in products available to consumers. 2️⃣ Solar Foods, the Finish startup "transforming CO2 into proteins" is also now "self-affirmed GRAS" in the US. Its protein, called solein, can be used in a wide range of applications. While things are not going so well for the general alternative protein ecosystem, it's good to see that two European companies are moving forward. Now, beyond regulation, there are still many challenges, notably scaling up production (to reach price parity) and finding access to enough capital to do so. 👉 Links to the news in the first comment #precisionfermentation #startups #foodtech #innovation
