Warning – corny #Halloween joke incoming: Why did the hot dog wear a costume? To relish the moment! Officially an empty nester, I decided to keep the Halloween spirit (and jokes) alive by dressing up my pup, Georgie. Seeing her in her costume got me thinking about how much excitement—and spending—surrounds Halloween each year. Recent data from the National Retail Federation shows that early Halloween shopping was on the rise this year, with 47% of consumers starting their purchases before October. This surge isn’t too surprising given that 72% of consumers celebrate with activities like handing out candy, decorating their homes, throwing parties or dressing up in costume – me included! Data this year also shows total Halloween spending is expected to reach an impressive $11.6 billion, with costumes and decorations both surpassing candy spending. Not only does this indicate a growing preference for experiences and creativity over traditional purchases, but it also reflects a shared excitement for holiday spending among consumers.
